Well first you must qualify what "so bad" is. Anyway, Hulk had a recent malfunction where (as best I can tell) the tire drive system would not engage the train and forced an evacuation of the ride from inside the lift tunnel.
As far as the reliability, sure you havent hear of too many spectacular chain breaks on B&Ms, but as RideMan Dave alluded to, there are several other problems that B&Ms face, that arent as "eye-catching" as a chain break, but can shut down the coaster nevertheless.
Specifically speaking of SFA's S:ROS, not to make excuses, but very little time elapsed between the pouring of footers to the first public rides, due to SFA problems with the local PG County zoning board. Most of the B&Ms, however, have had the opportunity to be constructed *well* in advance of opening day. That allows for time to work out any SNAFUs.
Why has Intamin killed 3 chains this year? The real answer is "I dont know". Do I believe, like Jeff, that it was just dumb luck? No. Do I believe, like some, that there is some inherent design flaw? Balderdash! If there was a design flaw in S:ROS, it would have been revealed in SFDL's version. The best explanation I can proffer is that there was a flaw in the actual chain material. IMO, there was a bad batch of steel somewhere. If the chains were all from this batch, then there you have it. (NOTE: While I am a licensed Engineering Intern, my specialty is NOT in forensic engineering.....YET).
And once again revisiting the apples/oranges thing. While you *say* that it completely different, it seems to me that you just contend that B&M has better apples (a point not without merit), not a different fruit. I will simply disagree with you here and leave it at that.

That does clear things up a bit, in that we don't all define reliability the same way. Dave is correct about the Point coasters, and I would have to guess that those are not B&M-engineered components either.
Oddly enough, I can attribute some problems to the control systems, which are also not necessarily designed by the manufacturers (cough-Consign-cough). Something about putting touch screens in the sun... ;)

What a debate! And Legendary, you once again have proved my point of 10 days ago...
Thanks for playing!

There's nothing like a woodie...
2Hostyl: Points taken, and yes, we can agree to disagree on the subject matter, but I think we understand each other at least.
Jeff: I was going to say the reason B&M's are so reliable is Consign's dealing with B&M and Intamin not having anyone as good as Consign doing business with them. Is this correct? I've always thought the major problems with Intamins were with computer programming, something which, I think, ConsignAG does rather well. Is that the major difference between the two companies?
Woody: Please tell me what the hell you're talking about. Thanks in advance. And try to at least be original next time with the sarcastic comments!

SFGAm '01: Better than Wildfire
I dunno... I'm not impressed with Cedar Creek Mine Ride's new system, and Raptor is notorious for seeing trains that aren't there.

Interesting. I wonder what, then, is the major difference between the two manufacturers. I mean, B&M's can go pretty long periods of time without much downtime, but seems Intamins are hit or miss. At least, that has been my experience with the two manufacturers.

My only real experience with Intamin's rides, outside of Disaster Transport, are with MF and the Supermen mirrors. SFA's ride went down with two broken chains, and I think that's a freak of nature. SFDL's hasn't had any significant downtime that I've heard. MF hasn't had any real problems outside of getting the train movement in the stations right to nail down the interval during the first two weeks of operation.

To go back to the chain breaks, and not to jinx it, but if the chain on Mantis breaks, someone's got to go down into that man-eating-fish-infested lagoon to get the chain out. :)
I thought that the chain on Corkscrew (Cedar Point) broke at the end of the season of '99. Is this true or another wild story?

Corkscrew's chain did snap.
Hey, people might say B&M is reliable. I don't know much from Intamin (although Perilous Plunge and superman both went through huge fixes), but When Riddler's Revenge opened it was having all sorts of trouble. For more than 2 or 3 months it would be down half the time I went.
