Whizzer out, new ride in for 2003 at Six Flags Great America

Posted | Contributed by Chitown

Another ride that's been at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee since it opened in 1976 is about to become history. Visitors have until Aug. 11 to get their final thrills on the Whizzer, a banking and twisting roller coaster that travels about 40 mph. It's considered a mild roller coaster suitable for children and adults. The park says a new ride will take its place for 2003.

If they really were taking spare parts from the 3rd train, could you explain to me how Whizzer was in 3 train operation yesterday.
Seriously, how hard would it be for Intamin or someone else to design new trains for this ride? This would put an end to the spare part/canibalization problem. The capacity isn't that bad if they run three trains.
I think my homepark of Adventureland could really benefit from this ride. We don't have a good steel coaster. I'm sure they could get a great deal on Whizzer.

To design new trains would be expensive. You can't simply say, ok now I want PTC to make 3 new trains by next month. If the new company does not have access to the cars original blue prints, they will have to create from scratch, which is insanely expensive. You would have to recreate the trains with the same mechanisms to function with the way the coaster was intended. Inevitably, thye would want some new features to the trains, which would cost even more. They are better off to buy something completly new rather than spending 250,000+ simply on a few new trains. Now that you have fixed the train issue, lets work on the track. The main problem Zinger had was not due to the trains. They had five functioning trains (six total, 3 cars per train) This worked wonderfully when we ran with 4 trains and still had a spare just in case. Zingers problem was track related. Every single morning, we had to weld the track. The metal can take this for a while, but after years of it, any metal worker can tell you, it takes it's toll.

I am very sad to see Whizzer go, but we all knew it was a matter of time. A year from now, most of us will have forgotten our anger about it's removal, especially while we are riding the replacement ride.

Remember when Whizzer had 5 trains? That was in the time when it was Willard's. That stopped after the 1980 accident.

Anyways, it's time for the whizzer to go. The new ride won't be family oriented.

Also- what is happening with Yankee Clipper/ Ice mountain Falls? Has it operated this season? That would be a great place for a family ride.Wait! (Light bulb appears above head) Could YC/ IMF be changed into a bobsled ride?

SFGAm is no longer a family place. So what! My mom never goes, and my dad and brothers love the coasters.
