What's wrong with clones?

The only problem that I have with clones is that what's the point of riding a clone if you can ride it at your home park and vise versa. I don't have anything against purchasing a clone it doesn't raise the park value any.

What is life without SFA?
I thought that the Space Mountain at DL was a single tracked ride and a little smaller than the MK version that has a dual track.
I can say that so far, SGoG IS Six Flags to me, but since I've moved, SFA is closer, but it will never BE Six Flags to me because growing up fairly close to SFoG, it never registered as being part of a bigger picture. So I doubt SFA will feel like SIX FLAGS when I go because the actual parks themselves cannot be "cloned" in any way (plus the history of SFA isn't as exstinsive). But after years of expansion, adding the age I'm at now and how I think about things, plus the clones, it could possibly take away some of the original magic when I do return to SFoG, seeing as how the park will nat least seem a little changed since all the SF stuff that goes down. As long as the parks remain some original integrity is I guess what I'm going for. It probally won't happen and SFoG will always seem to me like it did when I was a kid, but if all the parks get all the same stuff there's no sure way to tell until everybody has everything, but that'll never happen:).
Sf has to make clones such as SLCs and Boomerangs cause they cant give every park a B&M inverted. By the way, is the SFMM, SFGAm, and SFGAdv B:Tr's all clones?
2Hostyl, I knew you got the point, I was just trying to expand. I probally also forgot something, though. Like how good cloning is for a company like Vekoma. The R/D department or whatever they have must be incredible! That also pushes the envelope of coasters a little. Anyways, I see what you're saying, and I still probally will not see a boomerang boomerang until 2002. I also didn't know about Great White. Could rcdb.com ever find a fair way to label "clones", or maybe do they have model names, like Schwartzkopf's stuff did?

Clones will happen whether you like it or not, so why complain about them? You have to take into consideration that Six Flags DOESN'T WANT you to go to a park that is not near you. They DO WANT you to go the ONE that is nearby, enjoy your day, (spending $$$) then go home. It does not matter to the average John Q. SixFlagsPatron if there is another B:TR (or SLC, or Boomerang, or Deja Vu)somewhere else because he won't drive that far to get to another SF park. (the way we do)

Don't forget, we "enthusiasts" make up a VERY small percentage of the coaster riders of the world. Six Flags (and all the others) make ride choiced based on the General Public, not enthisiasts, period.

Would I rather have all original rides built and no clones? Yes. But I realize that it just won't happen.

"X" marks the spot in 2001!
Good points Soggy. I can't believe people still consider this an issue, it's pure and simple greed in my opinion. There are enough parks and coasters in the world not to have to worry one bit about clones, at Six Flags or anywhere else. Anytime I hear someone mention a clone, my first thought is, they're so spoiled, try not having ANY coasters near you.
Geez people, if you think one ride at a park being a clone is bad then take a gander at this. Marriott opened 2 parks in 1976 as Marriotts Great America in California and Illinois. THEY CLONED BOTH OF THESE PARKS AS TOTAL MIRRORS OF EACHOTHER!!!!!!!!! Do you look at Marriott as a idiot for this? Heck no!!! He did the right thing. He created 2 parks that were successfull. He hired Hollywood prop creaters to erect these parks. Everything was done exact down to the bathrooms. To me this was genius. Unfortanely they sold to 2 separate companies. The rest is history.

Ask the average patron what a coaster clone is and where the other coaster is and he will have a hard time telling you. Remember we live and breath coasters, to the normal person that's not normal.

Before I was an enthusiast, I never even knew there were more than "Six" Flag parks. I live in Ohio and the only one's I had heard of were SFoG, SFMM, and SFMM. I never even gave a thought about going to CP even though it's only 160 miles away.

BTW, I wouldn't mind a SROS at SFWoA. Actually, I would do almost anything to get one. Or even another one of the most famous BTR clones. Even a Deja Vu would be cool(Replace the aweful Mind Eraser with the addition). SF has some of the best coasters and when I think of the best coasters out now, their coasters are the first to come to mind.
I think I need to clarify myself here:

1. I like clones. They make good business sense on both the park and manufactuer sides, and they provide the oportunity for 'locals' to experience rides that would otherwise be inaccessible.

2. If I was mistaken about the Space Mountians, please forgive me. But my claim that Disney, Paramount and Cedar Fair all clone rides is still valid. Dont tell me that the Big Thunder Mountain Railroads are different. There is *no* disagreement that the two FOF's are identical. And there is no reason to discount the addition of boomers in both KBF & WoF as clones simply because boomers are located elsewhere.

3. Even though the Deja Vu's will be somewhat more exciting than the standard boomers, public reaction would be nearly as great even if they were standard (at the very least @ SFGAm where no such shuttles are nearby) simply because they are different from anything that was been in the area for almost 10 years.

I think I've said enough for this thread.

I thought I said that I liked them, too. As far as not talking about this, I think it was kind of an issue you could learn from debating, or thinking about more, because there is even a bad side to things that are good. Plus, SF did go into implementing a somewhat clone program I'll call it, so the SFoG news wasn't exactly news to most people here, but I can't figure out what's wrong with talking about it. If they clone and clone away, maybe it could happen to a point that the GP notices. Wouldn't that effect OUR experiences within the park. Once I lay down my money at the gate, I'm no different than anyone else there, and attendeance is a big issue for any park, so I wouldn't say that enthusiasts are that small of a factor. Yes, our opinions are different than the GP. And once again I'll say I like cloning. *** This post was edited by p_c_r on 2/28/2001. ***
