What's up with The Beast?

Made my annual trip to PKI last week and I just have to ask...what did they do to the beast? This this is just incredible now. The speed on this is just insane. If this has been discussed already, fogive me. I looked and couldn't find a thread that discussed it. I don't even remember this coaster running this fast. It is now not only my #1 woodie but probably top 5 all together.
After last fall's incident (wet skids led to one train bumping another in the station), the brakes were redone. Most of the trims were either removed or replaced with magnetic brakes. I'm sure this has been discussed.
The park removed ALL skid brakes and replaced them with fin and magnetic brakes. There are no brakes at all on the first drop. The magnetic brakes are now used for trim brakes and there are fin brakes in the station. The magnetic brakes I think, IMO, are slowing the train down a little bit too much. They could ease up on the brakes a little though.

Yeah it is running insane this year. To bad only a few of us, including me, have ridden it without any of the brakes!

Gas to get to PKI, $5.60. ACE card for walkback, $50.00. Meeting up with Beastnum1 and drinking 20 lemonjuice packets, priceless

The difference in ride between November and now (the last two times I've ridden) is night and day. I had to hang on for dear life the whole way on Friday. It screamed through the helix! In November, I thought the ride was no big deal.

I now love it.

Revised projection for 2002: 37 parks & 140 coasters. 27 & 105 through 8/11

Honestly, I think the trims are lower than the begining of the season, I didn't notice the ones on the second hill and I didn't barely feel the ones on the second drop.

The trims aren't any lower, Teenage Ninja. They can't lower the pull on magnetic brakes. It just might seem lower, but there is no difference.

That's just IYO. They really aren't slowing it down too much, they're slowing it down to the same speed as the skid brakes did, only since these are magnetic and stronger than skids, you can actually feel the pull on them. It's all good, though. Beast is running totally insane now!

-----------------

Haux......I'm pretty sure they can adjust the magnetic brakes. Anyone know 100%?

The only way to adjust magnetic brakes is by either making more space between the magnets or shorten the length of the brake strip. And they don't do that too often.

haux has got it, unless someone goes out there with a wrench they cannot be changed.

How did you get the opportunity to do this?

Technically, The Beast is running slower than it used to. I clocked the speed, I'm not going to tell how, but I did. But the new brakes slow the trains down more in the major parts of the ride, 1st drop, brake shed and 2nd drop. Certain sections of the track and some parts where the new breaks don't slow the trains down as much as the skids are faster...ie the helix.
I wouldn't know what is wrong with the beast. It is so bumpy and rickady that i refuse to ride it.

You can never give out too much AdReNaLiNe

Uh Acer there are no brakes on the first drop, and if you notice the train is making it farther up the second lift then it ever has before. How is this possible if it is slower before the helix?

All I need is 4.5 million bucks and a half a mile long sliver of land and maybe someone could build me my very own Shivering Timbers. ;)

Acer, if you're not gonna tell how you clocked it, we have no reason to believe you. The Beast is running faster than ever because of the less brakes. There are no brakes down the first drop anymore, so no brakes equals faster speeds!

Adrenaline_Rush, I have one thing to say to you: ride it at night.

O really? Have you ridden it lately?

I rode it on August 12, right after they opened it back up. And there are now magnets on the first drop.

Oh man, don't cheat yourself out of the second best woodie on the planet! IMO, second only to Junior.
