What's going on with Wicked Twister?

I know that the first 4 or 5 times I've been to Cedar Point this summer Wicked Twister was running full blast, and the Train came within 10 feet of the bumper on the top of each spire, but the past 3 times I've gone to the Point, it's been only running maybe 1/2 to 3/4 the way up - What's wrong with it? When I ask staff - they say something is wrong with it - I don't know what - they won't say - but the ride in the back seat isn't as fun as it used to be! Any responces would be great - Thanks

There's a design flaw in the towers. And that's the honest truth of it all.

What kind of design flaw though? I dont really see anything that would make that much of a difference - I just heard from my friend that they are going to be replacing the towers - Any truth behind that?

Whats your problem? Be happy you get to ride it!!! I drove 9 hours and it was closed BOTH days. Some people are so greedy and selfish. Who gives a damn if its running at full power or not? All I care is that if its at no power!
Well if a ride is designed to go a certain blast it should be Ride of Steel. I understand your upset that it was closed, but the other 14 coasters should have more than satisfied you.

The latest I had heard was bad steel and that some of the cross members were bending or cracking. I don't know how reliable that is, but it would seem to be more reasonable than a design flaw. I doubt they'd be running the ride if it was a design flaw. CP has welded several new cross members into place which can be seen in this pic. I don't know what is ultimately going to be the final fix for the ride, but for now, they've done this and changed the ride program in order to at least keep it up and running. Ultimately, there will probably have to be something more done for the long term though. Hopefully it'll be able to run at full strength again because the difference between WT opening day and now it is like day and night.

If it was simply a result of unsatisfactory steel being used originally, there wouldn't be a need for the Intamin employees that are basically living there now ;o)

Ride of Steel, simma down na. It doesn't appear as if anyones throwing a hissy fit about WT except you. I guess something is wrong with the ride, I personally don't know. But if there is something wrong, XFlighter just wants to know whats going on. It doesn't appear that he has a problem, just curious as to why it isn't performing the same. I would have a similar question if I was lucky enough to go to the Point multiple times a year.
I definately don't have a problem - I was just wondering - at first I thought it might be because of high winds or something, but sunday while I was there there was no winds at all so I thought I would just ask - I'm sorry if it seemed like I was upset! =o)

While I was visiting CP on July 24th I noted that there were several workers at the top of the rear support structure using a power wrench (very noisy) and what appeared to be an arc welder. The ride opened a few hours later, and seemed to be functioning okay. Not having seen it run prior, I cannot speak for the distance up the spirals, however, most riders seemed pleased with their experience.

On a side note. On this particular trip to Ohio, I visited SFWoA and rode S:UE. I am not a small guy and the ride ops "pushed" me into the restraint (or more the retraint into me). At CP, they did not. I have actually lost weight, yet this was the first time I have ever been turned away from a ride. Was I upset, not really. Better to be alive. At the same time, there was another person turned away from the same train load. This made me wonder if SF compromised the safety of the ride, or CP was just over cautious. I hope for the latter, as I would hate to see anyone fall from S:UE.

Sorry about yelling forgive me.

Those are bucket seats with over the shoulder restraints and seatbelt backups Coasterdad64... people of larger build have less to worry about than small kids who just barely make the 52" mark. Those restraints don't open up unless you unlock them with the electrical current.

Intamin goofed. It seems that there is more work on the front tower than the back, according to the employees. I am assuming some major work will be done during the offseason, or maybe the time inbetween Hallo-Weekends and the end of the regular season. It would be nice to have a full strength Wicked Twister during Hallo-Weekends, another reason to scream at the park.
When I rode WT on 7th the train was about 10 ft from the bumper. I noticed that later in the day they toned down the ride to only 3/4 of the way up the rear spike. When I rode WT on

This is a load of crap. I mean, come on, we all know that Wicked Twister is sinking into Lake Erie.

Pallleeeaaasse!

ophthodoc, don't be silly! They melted down VertiGo to make the steel that makes up Wicked Twister. That's why it's in need of welding ;)

My WT story:

Day 1: A storm had come through the day before so there were about 8 different wires supporting the rear tower from various locations. A guy was up at the top of the rear support tower just looking at it.

Day 2: About 1pm, the wires came down and the ride ran one test. 2 trains later, I was screaming my head off spinging wickedly high up the awsome rear tower.

As preveously noted, some of the track ties were greyish color. I hope they get all the problems fixed! This is a great ride and shouln't be missed.

My WT story, and I'll add that I was exceptionally lucky on the Spring trip:

Day 1 (night before CoasterMania): nighttime, 30 minute wait, 1 trip, row next to rear: awesome launch, full power, excellent twist, very disorienting....

Day 2, CoasterMania: closed all day. No rides....Like several other coasters this year, one ride was all I managed to get.....SO much better than 0....

If you're not watching "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart", you're just watching the news....

They put wires on the towers to support them in a storm?

MiLLeNNiUMRiDeR, now that's just not possible! VertiGo is still sitting in the employee parking lot...I should have gotten my picture taken beside it too but I didn't think of doing it until after the trip. Silly me.

CP really hasn't tried to keep the incident that happened with VertiGo under wraps from the view of the public.
