What was the name of the illfated ride at PKI?

It was in the late 80's because Vortex was still new. It was a tower with 12 or so "space shuttles" connected to the tower in single file line.

The gimmick of the ride was that one of the 2 passengers in the car could raise/lower the car and rotate it 360 degrees (very slowly, I might add).

Soon after, KI realized that they had fallen prey to the ol' "looks good on paper" idea and dismantled it a season or two later.

Anyone remember what it was called or know any of the specs for it?

It was called Flight Commander, by Intamin I believe. It was closed for a season because of a death on the ride. I think that was its 3rd season. It opened back up for one or two more years, then closed it for good. It was boring and the restraints were constricting.
Was it in a ring and you could turn it upside down? PKD had one but they took it out last year and PGS had one but they took it out.
A death? Oh no, don't tell me someone fell out while the cabin was inverted.

Yeah the ride sure wasn't all that fun.

I think I rode it once.
Someone did indeed fall out of the inverted cabin. But that someone allegedly was drunk and unconscious and slipped out of the restraints.

That was the same day two other people died at the park...another drunk who fell into the pond near Festhaus and the man who tried to save him. Both were electrocuted by a faulty wire or some such.

They call that day "Black Sunday." I believe that was in 1992 or 93.
I rode that ! It was new the first time I was at Kings Island. Didn't get bak there until just this year (last week actually).

Did those two guys that died near the Festhaus get electrocuted, or did those 15,000 carp or whatever eat them. Those fish are/were disgusting. They'd just roll over top of one another trying to get that fish food.

I haven't been there in 5 of so years, I hope they got rid of them. They made me sick.

They now have Goldfish in the pond. And only the guy who tried to save the drunk died.

I saw an explaination on how the restriaints on Flight Commander didnt work. When you have only one person in the cabin at once, and the cabin was sideways, smaller people could first have there legs, then the upper torso fall into the empty seat. I think PKI tried to fix it by adding seat dividers (not sure) but they ended up tearing it down. They now have another one of those rides (looks good on paper, not in reality), an European Bungy Jump or something like that where you are straped into a harness, attached to two bungy cords, and bounce on a trampoline. Its really not that good

Yah...they had one at PGA called "Skyhawk". It didn't really live up to it's potential. It had a lot of mechanical problems. I worked on it my last season there. They had plastic canopies that would slowly close after the operator pushed a button on the otside of the pod. Unfortunately, some didn't close slow (they slammed in fact). Another operator had pushed the button before I got there and the canopy slammed my head. Nice little trip to the hospital for some stitches that day. Drove in a security car that looked like a cop car. All the folks on the freeway slowed down for us.

Yeeee Haaawwww!
Didn't Knott's Berry Farm have one called XK1 or something like that and some lady fell out and died? does anyone know?
Like janfredrick said PGA had one, and now they hve those stink'n Eruo-Bungy things that cost $8! PGA is definatly try'n to milk some extra cash.
Those Euro-Bungy things are what PKI replaced Flight Commander with. Again, another perfect example of parks wasteing room for good rides with stupid pay rides.

How ironic:

-The rides that cost $15 Million are included with admission.

-The $8,000 bungy thing costs an extra 8 bucks.

"Upcharge" attractions are here to stay, it allows the park to remove extra cash from guests' pockets. (RCT players already know that noone ever leaves with money anyway, LOL).
