What Makes a coaster?

If I have to stop this car....:)

If we call it a rollercoaster, than it is one. Freefall/drop rides are techinically rollercoasters but we call them drop towers, it completely depends on how you look at it.

Purple cows eat silver moon pies, among fiesty, glowing fireflies.

The only people who REALLY worry about whether something is a coaster is someone who's deeply concerned with the "competition" factor of how many coasters they've ridden so they can eek out a credit on some carny ride to pad their numbers.

How about this, if you wanna call those little roads on the way to Kennywood from Ohio a coaster, be my guest. I frankly had ridden more tame coasters than that mess of steel, asphalt and concrete.

What amazes me is that in all these years of debating, someone of importance (who ever that may be) hasn't actually made a proper definition (well not what I'm aware of.)

Grant,

I think the reason is because ultimately, no one cares enough. I say if you want to, call it (whatever aparatus) a coaster. That, plus the fact that you will never get ONE SOURCE that everyone will subscribe to. Someone out there will decry it.

If it coasts, it's a coaster. :)

My engineers definition:

If it rolls and exchanges potential energy and kinetic energy to produce thirlls in other than a straight vertical drop then it's a roller coaster. This may make Intamin drop towers coasters,

I agree with you on that. I know I am going to get flamed here but the 1st generation Intamin drop rides are basically small versions of Superman in SFMM. Now no I'm not saying Superman isn't a coaster but 1st gen freefalls are just as much a coaster as it.

I like Mr. Fisher's definition.

But what about the tracked cars on the Wonder Wheel? ;)
