What is so great about the back seat?

Backseat all the way!!!!!!!!!!! The front is the overrated seat!!! It is also the longest wait! Everyone who doesn't know jack about roller coasters sits in the front because they think it is the best but the back is the hidden treasure. The back gives you so much fun and airtime! It's great!! I have ridden many coasters in the front just to compare it to the back and the only ones that I would wait for the front again would be Millennium Force and The Beast!!!!!!!

In the front you have more airtime because you are lifted out of your seat at a slower speed so it lasts longer. In the back you are lifted out of your seat at a faster speed so it doesn't last long at all.

Not true. If you hit the top of the hill at a faster speed, the forces will be greater resulting in more airtime. the laws of physics can't be argued with.

Actually, it really depends on the hill and where you are. First of all, a larger the force does not necessarily mean a longer stretch of airtime. Also, being lifted out of your seat while going slower does not necessarily mean a longer stretch of airtime.

It's all about which seat goes over the crest the fastest. Many coasters tend to go slow over the crest, but when the front starts heading into the valley, the tail is whipped over the top...more airtime for the back seat. But hills come in many different shapes and sizes...so this does not always hold true. The best airtime on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk's "Giant Dipper" is the front actually.

Forget about it. It can't be THAT bad! *** This post was edited by janfrederick on 6/21/2001. ***
Just need to clarify this a little more...

So the seat that goes over the top the fastest receives the most airtime. hmmm? so then... "If you hit the top of the hill at a faster speed, the forces will be greater resulting in more airtime." You said I was wrong in your first paragraph but then just restated exactly what I said in your own words in the second paragraph.

Very simply, what ever part of the train crests the hill at the fastest speed receives the most airtime. Now sometimes the speed of the train and the shape of the hill are just right resulting in a long, slow (glorious) moment of floater airtime in the front seat. But when the back car reaches the crest, the train is gaining speed again, so now the airtime is less of a floater and more of a pop, throwing you out of the seat and into the restraint. If the restraints weren't there and the passengers were thrown from the train, the passengers in the back would fly farther through the air then the passengers in the front.

Other then a double up, I can't imagine a situation where the front car would travel faster over the crest of a hill then the back car. This doesn't seem to follow the laws of physics.

One word: Airtime.
Try Raging Bull's or Georgia Scorcher's backseat, and then get back at me with that question.
The best back seat ride I have ever experienced is on Raging Bull. The airtime is insane - EJECT!!

the back is better cuz you get flung over the hills/whipped around loops..

the back is best for lapbar type coasters
the front is best for otsr type coasters.
but sometimes its good to switch it up

Personaly I like the front seat becuase of the air in my face and the feeling of being alone.
i like the feeling of freefalling down a drop so i ride in the back seat
once again, its a matter of opinion, and if someone likes the backseat of a ride more than the front, and you like the front more, its kind of pointless to convince someone otherwise.

on hypers I sit in the back to get the most airtime i can. other rides, or if its my first time riding it, I sit in the front to get the total feel of it.
With the exceptions of some inverted coasters, I am a backseat rider almost exclusively. I know that on many coasters, like Magnum, you get that insane ejector air while reaching the apex of a hill riding in the front car. However, I enjoy the feeling of getting pulled over the top of the hill, feeling that upward floatation or ejection, and then floating out of your seat all the way down the next hill. I think that is the major difference I notice--you only seem to float down hills out of your seat while in the back (and how glorious it is to float down that 25, 50, 100, or 200 foot fall :)).

According to the "official" count, next year's new coaster lineup will feature 17 Arrow 4-Ds, 21 TA2Ks, 34 B&M floorless's, 17 Intamin Gigas, 12 beemer flyers, and 247 CCIs. And oh yeah, CP will receive one of all of these.
Try the Riverside Cyclone in the back, and remember to hold on!

So everyone on this site that prefers the front on a coaster doesnt know jack? Think before you start typing. As far as the front being the longest wait? While in most cases it is, some of the popular coasters at a park have some pretty long waits for the back also. I am a backseat rider also for the most part, but sometimes depending on time and mood, I will take the shortest wait for a train.

Anyone who rides the Magnum in the front car 3rd seat back will agree that is where the most airtime is. It throws you out of the car. I'd ridden that thing about 30 times in the back until last year when I first tried the "ejector seat". It was amazing, and that is where I ride now. I found that the exact same seat works in some other coasters. One that I found works well in that same seat is the Racer (frontwards) at PKI. I assume that the reason this works is because while traveling up (say a bunny hop) the front starts to slow up the hill so once it hits the top, the back (which was originally pulled) now pushes the rest of the train flinging you out of your seat as you crest the hill. I'm no physics major, but it seems to make sense. Anyway, ejector seat is really neato.

spoon!
It seems to depend on the ride. Most times I have to try both front and back to see which gives the best ride.
The back seat is where all the cool kids hang out. Don't you want to be cool?

Every ride has a different character and needs to be tried from several seats. Phoenix is a strange woodie in that there is more air toward the front. Ghostrider is backseat all the way. My favorite on S:RoS SFNE is 1.2. Coney Island Cyclone depends on what kind of abuse you're looking for, laterals up front, ejector in back.

You are right about more speed over a hill usually means more airtime. I just wanted to clarify that it was not just because of a greater force, but because of a greater force for a longer time. Remember, the word airtime has the very important word: "time" in it. The "air" part comes from the greater force. The "time" comes from tick, tick, tick...

As far as airtime in the front, imagine a hill that levels off at the top. The front car goes fastest over the crest. As the train slows down at the top, the airtime decreases. Also, you can get more airtime in the front when going over small bunny-hop hills. Or when you have a large hill going into a bunny hop. The rear of the train is still pushing down the backside of the large hill which accelerates the front over a small hill. Voila! Airtime for the front.

I usually try to ride both front and back on all coasters. I have -never- been on one where the front (or the third) seat gave more airtime. I ride the front for the view the back for the thrill. But if you're with a novice rider stick to the front or the middle. On every coaster the back not only provides more airtime, it is significantly rougher, and can be painful on some (the Coney Island Cyclone is the best example).
