What is Direct3D Device? Answer please

Playa,

Yes, I enjoy using the Lexus of computers! ;) And why do people think us Mac users try to convert people? They have superior machines, that overall, thanks to lower prices, are a better value than many Windows counterparts. For a high end machine, yes a Mac is going to cost more. A Dual G5 with a 23" display will run at least about $5000, more if you upgrade the features. But for home users, Macs are a better value, as you get a better machine for the money.

Anyway, If your computer has an AGP slot, you can get an ATI Radeon for about $30 at Micro Center.

If your computer doesn't have an AGP slot, it will probably cost you at least $50 for a video card.

Lexus...another overpriced product. The quality of the lower priced yet similarly equipped Camrys and Avalons is just as good as the Lexus(es).

I'll give you that Sam, you made a *perfect* analogy! ;)

Does anyone know if theres a driver for an ATI Radeon 7000 for XP, all I could find was a driver listed under Windows ME ???

I think this is what you need.

Not positive, but if I had that card that's what I'd be downloading.

Hey Thanks Gonch, exactly what I needed! :)

Sam: Macs are a better value for families huh? Let's look at this scene from the Wal-Mart electronics department:

Kids: Daddy, daddy--buy us this computer game!

Mr. Froot Loop: Sorry, kids. We can't.

Kids: But Daddy! It only costs ten bucks!

Mr. Froot Loop: Our computer's too GOOD for that game.

Kids at Wal-Mart: I wish our computer sucked like everyone elses. *pouts*

You see, A Lexus runs on the same gas and motor oil you can get anywhere. A top-of-the-line real PC is a Lexus. A Mac is more like a car that runs on cooking oil and pedal power--just odd for the sake of oddness.

Unless you own both, I don't think that's a very qualified opinion. We have both. Stephanie's iBook is easily the best computer we have for the purpose of being a "living room" computer. It's quiet, doesn't get hot, lasts for a week without a charge, and is awesome to travel with (it's the 12-inch model).

Can we game with it? The mega-popular games will all run on it, sure. Can I use Visual Studio on it? Of course not.

There's a place and application for every device, and if it weren't for the fact that I'm a Microsoft developer, I might not have any Windows machines in my house. The Mac meets our needs in every other way.

Apple can design a better notebook than scads of offshore intergrators working with low-bid parts and reference designs...or the 'name-brand' vendors who choose one to private-label and sell as their own. Absolutely. No doubt about that.

But as the sole family PC? I'll hand you two kids and you'll see my point in about 45 seconds, 15 seconds after that and at least twice each week from that day on.

Apple makes the best handles in the world. But these days, it's all about the razor blades.

.

You know, that's *another* reason to buy a Mac for the kids' homework computer. ;)

And, for what it's worth, some of the best laptops in the world were made by IBM. Practically indestructable---My research group has owned about 30 over the last 10 years and only lost two to disaster. (And one was photo finisher that ate away an LCD panel, but the machine itself still works great.)

Now that Big Blue has sold off their laptop business to a Chinese firm, well, we'll see about that.

Ok, there are good points for mac and good points for pc. Now think of it this way even though alot of the time pc's are ok but they have cheap software (good for average user, not including OS) now take a mac, costs less now a days but had more expensive software because demand is low for average users. Either way here, now that I think of it your screwed either way, both have flaws! Meh...so why bother argueing?
I use both. I just like my Mac better! :) Sorry to start the debate. I think I was just bored. Being an unemployed recent college graduate, I should probably be looking for work instead of arguing computers. Too bad Apple didn't hire me for retail back when I was in college. I would love working in sales for them (or for Cedar Fair)!

Perfecly understandable, although I don't like macs as much as pc's it would be nice to own one, and do proffesional photography, digital video, and other variety of stuff to do on it. But right now I'm just happy with my own pc sitting in my room! :)

You don't need a Mac to do any of those things. Photoshop and Avid look exactly the same on both platforms.

It all comes down to which UI and hardware you like better.

TopSpinJay,

Some constructive criticism:

It is nice that you also like Macs, but on this board, you need to use proper punctuation, grammar, and capitalization. While it is great that you are a Mac fan, your post was difficult to read. Next time, please take the time to properly write your posts, for the benefit of the community.

Best of luck with your new Mini,

Sam
