What coaster took the biggest leap in coaster tech

Good point, kRaXLeRidAh. I haven't seen Stealth, so I don't know if it includes all that active junk on the trains that X-Flight has; I was under the impression that the seat motion on Stealth was more conventional, using a cam on the train and a rail in the station, kind of like the seat rotation on X. If it's similar to X Flight then certainly Stealth would take the prize...

Probably FOF because it was the first coaster to use the great LIM tecnology.

Call me crazy, but I'm gonna have to say MF, sure it's a "regular" roller coaster, but look at all the records that it broke when it came out. It was the first coaster ever to utilize a cable lift system, that alone should be considered a breakthrough in technology. The engineering, to construct a coaster over 300 ft. continuous circuit, was alone an engineering marvel. Sure it's not the tech ride of the year, but, oh well, it was definetly a breakthrough ride.

Welcome back riders, how was your ride...Enjoy your day, here at Cedar Point, America's roller coast.
I think the chain dog, upstops, lapbars/OTSR, and anyother safety device(including computers) that make coasters what they are today.  Without many of these, coasters would have to be tamer in order to make it around the track safely.  I am thankful for this because we most likely wouldn't be seeing coasters like they are today without these.

Also, I would like to say John Allens' Racer at Paramounts Kings Island.  It brought back the second golden age of the rollercoaster.  Heck, it ever caused a movie to be made called "Rollercoaster".  I think that is pretty cool itself.

Raging Bull, simply because of the creative new lapbar. I believe 1/2 of a coaster experience is the car, the other half is what is outside of the car. The restraints can make or break a ride, and Raging Bull did that.

Plus Raging Bull is just an amazing coaster.

As for other technological marvels, I would have to give it to Disney with Haunted House and then Magic Mountain. It introduced a new concept of having a rolling query which made the lines go signifigantly faster. If only more rides had that type of a query (its expensive, though). At least new rides should have both loading and unloading docks, at a minimum. That would get 1.7-1.8X the loading speed.

If I could change the topic, slightly, to WHO was the biggest JUMPer in coaster tech, I'd easily say John Miller.  I'm sure we'd all be a little tired of switchback railways by now, even IF they had great theming...LOL.

How did Magnum make a leap in coaster technology? Besides of the height it had nothing differnet from existing coasters... The only difference it has was that it was larger. I think the launched coasters really have had a great influence on coaster technology.

I think what many are trying to say was that regardless of the term 'technology,' Magnum broke barriers because it was the first over the much heralded 200 foot level.  Granted, the same can be said for Goliath, Millennium Force, and now Steel Dragon.  You must agree, though, that Magnum's introduction into the coaster world pretty much started us on the 'coaster wars' we enjoy so fruitfully these days...

I misread the original question. Technology-wise, no, Magnum wasn't much beyond the norm. Still, it obviously had an impact on the industry.

Matterhorn definitely did help out the steel coasters for the future.
Am I wrong?  Where is Flight of Fear(s)?  I believe that these were the very first coasters to use the LIM(or is it LSM) technology.  Therefore these coasters ushered in the age of the launched coaster.  I also believe that these coasters have very well engineered layouts, whether or not the train design is/was good.

For sure it's gotta be Magnum XL...first coaster that really was tall, a big break through in coaster history.

"Have to agree with Lynch and say Magnum.  As far as I know, and what I have read, that coaster was built using technology developed by the Japanese for coasters to stand up to large earthquakes.

If it was originally designed to survive earthquakes why is it sinking? LOL jk!!!
