Wardley: Yes, a B&M flying coaster at Alton Towers in 2002

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Since few CoasterBuzz members were able to attend the European Coaster Club's first annual general meeting in the UK, few could confirm that the rumors about John Wardley (worked with B&M for Nemesis and Oblivion) announcing a new ride for Alton Towers were true.

We went to the source, Wardley himself, and he replied with this answer:

"Yes, this is true. I did announce at the annual general meeting of the European Coaster Club that the first B&M "flying" coaster is currently being built at Alton Towers, and will open in March 2002."

Oh, people c'mon, improve from Vekoma's Flying Dutchman?????? It's B&M for crying out loud, they can do anything, and will do anything, and i bet you money that this ride will be better than Vekoma's version. I can't wait to see this thing. An earlier post said that tree line rule is good, i am glad they have that, it will truly be a better ride becuase of it, going underground and stuff, i can't wait to see this. Now only if it could come over to the states.

You will be STANDING for more at Six Flags over Georgia.
I hope Six Flags Great Adventure waits and gets a B&M Flying Machine instead of the rumored Vekoma for 2002. I'd really like to see GAdv. get a good stand-up or a 4-D.
i wonder if B&M is designing any special track for the flying coaster?

are you ready to go vertical?...V2 SFMW 2001 ...
First off, SFGAd will not do anything that big for 2002. I just have an inkling...

Secondly, I think we are right that the B&M flyer will be better than Vekoma's, but not because of engineering. I think it'll be better because of Alton Towers' height limit, and the great lengths people like Wardley will go to make their rides great.

It's coming...

What the train could look like. Looks like the artist used the Floorless drawing as it's obviously upside-down. In real-life, the main wheels would be on top: http://www.sw5online.ic24.net/ideas.htm
Replicated plan, note the tunnel & dual stations: http://www.sw5online.ic24.net/largeplan.htm There's no way the ride could be 200+m tall, it's probably the height above a reference point or sea level.

Yes, SW5 has been under construction for some time now. It is rumored to have a never before seen element on a coaster i.e a world first. I can't wait to see it up & running. :)

I think the new coaster will be great. Hopefully, Six Flags will opt to buy some of these B&M flying coasters instead of more Vekoma Flying Dutchmans. If they do, I hope to see one at SFMW in 2003-2004 so that SFMW could compete for flying coaster respect with PGA's Stealth.
CoasterGod: thanks for the links. The cars look great...should blow away the Vekoma model and their lay-down approach. Can't wait to see this coaster in action.
This coaster will be incredible!
This coaster will be amazing. There are many rumours for it such as a vertical launch lift hill!!!!!!!!!! That would be brilliant
Whats this about a tree-line height limit @ alton towers?

The killjoys who live in nearby villages to Alton Towers do not like to see the coasters that help generate income for their area!

Anyway during the mid nineties the local planning authority decided that no coasters could exceed the treeline. At this time the great coaster 'Thunder Looper' had to be dismantled and packed of to Brazil, I think. This had been erected with temporary planning permission as the planning authorities knew they were going to impose a height restriction. The Corkscrew escaped this death sentence, probably because it is listed or something! But they did paint the highest portions of track green in an effort to keep everyone happy.

Alton Towers does have different types of coasters now because of this height restriction and all of them are fantastic, but what we really need at Alton Towers is bigger trees I think some serious investment is needed in importing Californian Redwoods!
