Roughly 37,000 unionized employees at Walt Disney World are preparing to negotiate for higher wages, more affordable benefits and improvements to pension plans as their union contract expires at the end of March.

What really needs to stop with the teachers in Ohio is this "Retire - Rehire" nonsense. Other unions don't allow their members to retire then take on another position involving similar responsibilities. It's taking away work, and you could lose your pension. Yet, public school teachers are double dipping while these kids coming out of college can't find a job.

To me, the biggest issue facing public pensions (really state and local one as the feds have largely addressed the issue) is sustainability (or lack thereof). As a matter of fiscal policy, I would freeze all public pensions immediately (or at least as soon as possible under applicable labor contracts) and move all government employees to defined contribution plans.

Wait wait wait, so my anecdote was based in truth? You don't say? It's as if I work for a theme park company or something.

SeaWorld is not unionized.

Jeff is 100% on with all his points. I worked at WDW for 7 years - both in a hourly union represented role and in management.

I will say unions don't hold people from management - but from promotions. Management at Disney is nonunion and anyone who meets the general position requirements can apply. However within the hourly roles unions can hold people back from lead/supervisor/coordinator roles.

Weak management, the clause says, all things being equal, union seniority will prevail. So if a manager holds someone accountable all things won't be equal.

They can't hold someone accountable. Are you not listening? In what universe where accountability can be enforced can people get away with skipping out days at a time?

Yeah, I'm listening, we had someone who was a no call no show one day, found him dead on the ground in his home when we went to look for him. Sometimes people get sick or get in accidents and can't call in.

And you call me out for using anecdotes? You win.

Did the union try to get him re-instated?

Some people are just dying for a day off.
