When Walt Disney World opened 40 years ago — officially on Oct. 1, 1971, although the grand opening ceremony was not until Oct. 25 — the less-than-ballyhooed turnout for the first few weeks led some observers to believe Disney’s venture into Florida was a dud. Disney stock took a tumble.

I am going to Walt Disney World and Florida for the first time in my life at the end of October. Hopefully the weather will still be warm, and the attraction lines are at a minimum. I guess Disney has always been pretty much about theming the past 40 years and less about thrills, ala Busch Gardens and Universal.
