Disney World’s Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, a two-day hotel experience, is closing and will make its final voyage this September after being open for only more than a year.

I love how the Disney blogs think they’re above attributing sources. That’s the second post on the subject that I’ve read this morning where the author posted the quote as if they were present at the conference.
On the bright side, it wasn't five paragraphs of SEO keywords first.

The bloggers I don't think understand basic accounting. They're quoting D'Amaro as saying they'll accelerate depreciation, which only means they'll write off the expense sooner than excited. Big capital projects aren't typically written off all in the same year. I think my accountant put everything on five-year schedules, though I seem to recall at one point that you could write off some things of a certain value all in one year.
TL;DR... Disney was going to write off the hotel regardless, it was just a matter of when.

I didn’t look at the depreciation in detail, but not uncommon to write off the value on fixed assets that have been “Discontinued”. Typically a company takes an “impairment” charge for the remaking amounts that were not yet fully depreciated.
rheres a difference between book depreciation and tax depreciation but the concept is the same when it comes to discontinuation and impairment.
Gosh, I hate Wheel of Fortune. Tonight a poor sap hit a 28,000 spin when he hit 9 S’s on a Same Letter puzzle. Then he spun for a bankrupt and lost it all.
Anyway, what was really of note was when another contestant won the big trip. It’s always worth a lot of money and usually guarantees an overall win. Well this week is Star Wars week with fans competing for cash and fabulous prizes, and I had to laugh when her big trip was a stay at Galactic Star Cruiser then the rest of the week at WDW resort.
She was so thrilled she screamed as if she had been granted a dream come true. I mean, what Star Wars superfan wouldn’t? Maybe they’ll substitute a cruise…
Saw the same thing. 😅 I thought the puzzles would be Star Wars related (yes, I'm a nerd there), but alas just the prizes.
Maybe they can sneak her in before September?
I wonder. Sometimes game shows are weird in how and when they pay. I’ve had friends on shows and they’ve shared unexpected experiences. For instance, did you know that if you’re a winner but for some reason your episode doesn’t air they likely won’t pay you? And I had a friend win the car (actually a pick up) on Price is Right. It was an economy model and especially when they informed him of his expenses. The truck was completely stripped- nothing- not even a radio or a cigarette lighter. And he had to buy wheels. Not just tires, mind you, but the actual wheels. I guess they didn’t have to include them. Along with all that, taxes, and a plane ticket to LA the big prize was an expensive one.
I won a car in a contest with a newspaper and car dealership the summer I graduated from high school. It wasn't completely stripped down, but it was a base model - standard transmission and no radio. We had to pay the taxes, of course. Standards were not as unusual as they are now, but still not as common as automatic. I had only driven one a handful of times and got good at it quickly. My dad got me a car stereo for a graduation present.
I didn't know a radio/cigarettes lighter was optional.
I guess I'm not surprised, but more fascinated with how that all works.
Promoter of fog.
I was 18 and it was a car that cost me $1100 in taxes and my dad a $300 car stereo and speakers. I didn't care what kind of transmission it had.
Lord Gonchar:
Crap. This means SFGAdv might need a hotel.
I know the post is 6 weeks old, but thank you for the laugh. I was thinking the same thing reading through this thread.

Wheel of Fortune only spends about 30-35 days a year taping episodes, so if this episode just aired, it was likely shot far enough back (way before the announcement) that she would have plenty of time to visit before it's closure. Hell, she has probably already had her trip to WDW.

Not so, as you don’t get your prize until after the show airs.I suspect a substitution may be in the offing
That reminds me of a friend who was on 100,000 Pyramid when he lived in New York. He had great stories but the best happened once the show aired and the prizes started rolling in. Not just what he won, but lots of random stuff from sponsors. For months afterwards they’d be sitting on the couch and there’d be a knock on the door. “Here’s your year’s supply of White Rain shampoo. Where ya want it?” Stuff like that.
