Walled Lake, MI Amusement Park? Anybody know of t

My Grandfather was telling me that there used to be a small amusement park in Walled lake Michigan. What caught my attention was that he said they used to have a Roller Coaster.

This park would have sat about 15 minutes from my house but I have never heard of it (except for a mention in Roller Coaster Rollback last week).

Does Anyone have any information on this park?

From this thread, it appears that CP Lady once visited there... http://www.coasterbuzz.com/forum.aspx?mode=thread&TopicID=22364

Yes, I remember Walled Lake. Mostly I remember the roller coaster, Flying Dragon, and the fact that my parents used to "date" at Walled Lake.

I once asked about getting this information added to the Coasters and Parks here, but without much more to prove it's existence than my "word", Flying Dragon has yet to be added. I actually have 50 coasters in my track record, not 49.

BTW, that is my website that was referenced.

I was surprised to learn of Haugue Park, in Jackson MI from that postcard page. That is basically my front yard. I must learn more about it.

I don't remember any park in Walled Lake, but I do remember Edgewater in Southfield, on 7 Mile road. They had two coasters, Soul Train and Wild Mouse. It close back in 1981. Here's the info from rcdb.

What was that park in Walled Lake called?

Walled Lake Amusement Park.

And if you check the links to my website provided above by Redman, you can also get a bit of history about Edgewater Park, and Boblo Island. I only made a couple trips to Walled Lake. But I'd make a couple trips to Edgewater and at least one to Boblo every summer.

Sorry I've been away, gang! My PC at work can't handle the new format of CBuzz, and I'm locked out of fixing anything by those joyful EDS folks....

Sadly, the area where the park used to stand is now just a bunch of condo's. My efforts to find information about the park through my family and the city of Walled Lake revealed little info.

I'm not surprised that the city didn't keep much info from the park, as the City Council is made up of a bunch of self-important low-level bureaucrats. For cryin' out loud, at a town planning meeting, I even saw them complain about a guy who wanted to put in a (alcohol-free) bowling alley! They thought it might attract "questionable types". That's right, a bowling alley!!!

Excellent George, can't believe in my lifetime here I never knew about that place. I have many history books of the area and one of my best friends in school was from Vandercook Lake. Thats only 15 minutes or so from my door. Amazing information.

Sorry to bring back such an old thread, but I do have a little info. My dad worked at the Walled Lake Amusment Park in the late 1930's. Sorry to say he past away about 10 years ago, but he did tell me a few stories. Durring the summer he worked the sharp shooter game, you had to break bottles with a 22 cal. rifle to win a prize, believe it or not. He also worked on the speed boat rides, they were cristcraft boats that took people out for rides on Walled Lake. During the winter he worked accross the street at the Walled Lake Casino and Ball Room, which had bands like Tommy Dorsey, and Glen Miller play there on a regular basis. The Casino burned down in the late 60's or early 70's.

What I can remember from when I was a kid, I am 40 years old now, is they turned the larger buildings into a weekend flea market. I do remember that the coaster, the Flying Dragan, was still standing, up untill the mid 70's, not running of course. The circut ran around part of the park with the supports going down through some of the buildings, this is my first memory of ever seeing a roller coaster.

The park was accross the street, East Lake Drive, from Walled Lake, the actual lake, but more info might be gathered from the City of Novi, where the park was really located, not the City of Walled Lake. I know I am about 2 years late with this info, but hey what the heck better late then never. LOL

Also to CP Lady, I have very fond memories of Boblo, went there for years, my best memory was my 8th grade trip there with my whole class, that was great. Now my son is in the 8th grade and we are going to CP on the 16th of June, can't wait. *** Edited 5/27/2005 8:42:52 PM UTC by Grady*** *** Edited 5/27/2005 8:45:40 PM UTC by Grady***

Been going to the Point for over 30 years and still love it!!!!!!!!!!!
I live in Novi, Michigan.

I don't know of any historical records about the park, but I've never looked before.

My grandpa used to tell me about this park sometimes and how they had some waterslide that several people were killed or badly injured on.

I've been to where the park used to be. A lot of it is just a open grassy park-type place now.

That is all that is there now, it was all completly removed when they rerouted 13 mile road and East Lake Drive. I know it is Novi because the boarder between Walled Lake and Novi is 14 Mile Road, and this is a full mile South of that into novi. *** Edited 5/27/2005 8:55:59 PM UTC by Grady***

This site has links to all of Michigan's defunct parks.

On the Walled Lake link there are some great pictures including a color aerial photo clearly showing the Flying Dragon coaster:
