I do that quite a bit over here in the UK - i take a few days off and get the computer to plot the route to the theme parks i want to go to - stop off overnight at motels or guest houses (or as we call them over here, travel inns and B&Bs) whenever i get too tired to carry on driving, and repeat until the trip is done. Theme parks, shops, ice cream. good combination. I once pre-booked a motel near(ish) to alton towers, and it turned out i had inadvertently booked a motel smack in the middle of birmingham's out-of-town entertainment mecca, so we had a great night of good food, good drink, movies, clubs, women (ahem), not much sleep (AHEM).
Married now though, so all routes are planned in advance since women like to be over-organised (no offence moosh!) and i couldn't care either way. Give me a map, a car and a tank full of gas and i'm happy.
