UPDATED: Pleasureland Southport worker dies inspecting Sky Ride

An amusement park worker has died after he became trapped on a cable car ride at Pleasureland Amusement Park Southport. The 59-year-old man caught his shoulder in the ride while carrying out a daily safety check.

UPDATE: (8/27/04 9:23 ET) Investigators believe worker's safety harness pulled him into ride's machinery.

And this is why I'm surprised and alarmed to see Maintenance men do some of the things they do while rides are in operation.
Except that in this particular case, the maintenace man in question was doing what he was doing in the prescribed manner, when the ride was not in operation. Maintenance guys do a lot of alarming things, but based on the news reports that doesn't appear to be the case here.

Obviously this is an accident that will require some further investigation with questions such as:
Exactly what was his body position and why?
Were procedures adequate?
Were procedures followed?
Are the guards adequate?
Were the guards in place?
If the safety harness was in fact part of the problems, was it worn properly?
Could it be modified to make it safer?
