Universal Studios Japan execs get pay cut with scandals

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The president of Universal Studios Japan apologized Wednesday and said executives -- including himself -- had been punished with pay cuts after recent scandals raised questions over corporate ethics at the Hollywood theme park in Osaka. Akira Sakata acknowledged that his company, USJ Co., served food cooked with expired ingredients and used untreated industrial water in drinking fountains at the park in the western Japanese city. He said pay cuts had been imposed on 19 company officials

Wow, in some countries, company execs take responsibility and punish themselves if they do something unethical. What a brilliant concept!

Wahoo - note that they were caught. In other words they had no qualms doing something unethical, what IS amazing is that instead of pointing fingers at some poor minimum-wage scapegoat they are openly taking the heat themselves. That is impressive!

The other question is, did the pay cuts really originate with USJ or did they come from the parent company?
The Japaneese have a different view on many aspects of business compared to their US conuterparts... I admire the Japs for making this move. It shows they have their priorities in the right spot.

I would guess the people getting the pay cuts, but who were not suspended, really didn't know what was going on. The ones who were suspended are probably the ones directly responsable for what happend. The top guys getting the cuts though shows they are still getting blamed partially. After all it was thier job to mangage the people below them and they obviously didn't do too good of a job at it. Thus the reason they were punished. Now if we could get some US executives to act like these guys.........

Japs???? What is this, 1940? I sure hope the Krauts don't find out.

LMAO, kpjb....thanks for putting it in the proper perspective...

...but I gotta admit that if the execs KNEW what was going on with food/water, and were OK with it, they'd be looking for new jobs....if it was MY company....I assume if the "lower-level" employees were doing this without the knowledge of the execs, they'd be looking for work...

...why are there ALWAYS two different sets of rules, one for white-collar crime (yes, CRIME) and another set for blue-collar crime....notice how GWB claims he *wants* the Enron bigwigs to give back their ill-gotten booty, but no one will EVER go to prison for any "misdeeds".... *** This post was edited by rollergator on 8/8/2002. ***

Punishing themselves with pay cuts? Whoop-de-doo. As if upper management types live from paycheck to paycheck.

I'll tell you what: Keep your money and punish yourself with FREE LUNCH for a week--know what I mean?

As someone who worked at the park when it opened, I am not the LEAST bit surprised. After all, the park was built on a toxic waste dump.
D'oh! Went right over my head (or under my butt...). But really though (killing playa's joke through and through) were there complaints about the food? Sometimes food even after the expiration date is still "good". I've often used Milk weeks after it "expired" (of course I froze it for a while and my fridge is extra cold...)

In that case, book a flight to USJ immediately. I hear they're having a fuzzy green tempura, GubMent Cheese sashimi and 'spring' water buffet next week.

Maybe you can run to the can quick enough.....but can you unfasten that big CURT JR buckle and get situated in time?

Well I really didn't feel like mispelling "Japaneese" twice in one post. I'm not a racist... I didn't even know "Japs" was a term used back in the 40's.

I think they should fire the people. If they knew about it, they should be extremely punished. Like CoastaPlaya said, those guys probably don't live paycheck to paycheck.

And Zero-G, don't worry about the "Japs thing." I have always thought "Japs" as being short for Japanese. And as far as the 40's go, do we think being called a "Yank" or a "Yankee" is that bad. Nope, so the "Japs" is in no way wrong to me. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Yeah ... instead of $250000/month we're getting $249999.

If you want to impress me, they should eat their own food and drink their own water!

No excuses ... they have bought dishonour on the Universal family. Sepukku (Ritual Suicide) is the only answer or at least chop their little fingers in loyalty!
