Universal Studios enters final weeks of construction for Mummy

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Just three months shy of its spring opening, Revenge of the Mummy is part construction site, part thrill ride. Its maze of stage sets is nearly complete, and a roller-coaster track coils like a whip through its building on the back lot at Universal Studios Florida.

Ok, before anyone starts to post the 'How come Everest is taking so long?' stuff, here is something you need to remeber. Mummy is inside a pre-built building, and while the ride is heavly themed, it's still not as big as M:S or Everest.

Now, does anyone thing this report might have some spin to it? I hardly find it true that Mummy's sets and installed yet. If I remeber correctly, the track just came in a few months ago.

You don't need track to build the sets. Heck, you don't even need a building for that.

Depends on what you mean by build the sets. Pre build everthing for a 'inster slot A into tap A' thing, you can do it without track. But since Big Thunder, all non supportive sceanery has come latter. Why put the furniture inside a skelington house and put the floor in latter?
Mole: Didn't the article say that the Mummy had been in development, at least conceptually, since 1999. Disney only announced EE as an idea in the last quarter of last year didn't they?

What kind of coaster do we think we are dealing with here people? Variation on a Wild Mouse style ride, perhaps? 55 feet isn't a lot of vertical clearance to be working with (assuming they haven't excavated inside the building and/or won't be using a launch system like Disney's Rock and Rollercoaster ).

I didn't say you had to install the scenery, but you don't need to build it on-site either. I mean, traveling Broadway shows don't start from scratch in every city. They build it once and assemble it on the stage of the week. The dinosaurs on the JP ride were probably being build long before the foundation for that ride went up.

I agree with that statement Jeff. I'm just saying that the installation of the themeing is fast, a little too fast. That would have been a better word.
Yep, sure, wild mouse ;)
That 'coaster' wasn't officially approved until Spring 2002, so that is your lead time.
The coaster is a Premier LIM system that can go forwards and backwards.
Impulsive: Yeah, I know it's unlikely, but there would have been something ironic about Universal announcing that their new "Big Gun" in the ride "arms race" with Disney would be a Crazy Mouse ride! Can't quite put my finger on it though! ;-) I'll give it some more thought! :-)

A unique thought but, well, yea =)
So do we have any kind of idea on what kind of coaster this is going to be other than it is launched? Also, there really isn't any kind of liklihood that it will be done in four weeks in time for spring break?
