Universal Beijing Resort opens in China

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Harry Potter fans came dressed as wizards as Universal Studios opened its first theme park in China on Monday under anti-virus controls. The Hollywood studio’s “Jurassic Park,” “Kung Fu Panda” and “Harry Potter” film franchises, plus Minions from “Despicable Me” feature prominently at Universal Studios Beijing on the Chinese capital's eastern outskirts.

Hearing from someone who attended three of the preview days the following things:

- Decepticoaster is a tamer version of Hulk with vest restraints and capacity issues, since its only been running two trains so far.

- The best ride by far in the park is Jurassic World Experience, the dark ride that uses the Spiderman car in an incredible environment and features insane scenes.

- Food is very expensive, but very good.

- The Mack powered Inverted Coaster in Jurassic World is not yet open.

- Golden Horse supplied some rides, including a nice family coaster in the Minions area. Quality of the coaster is much improved.

- Better programming on Forbidden Journey.

I wonder if the Mack powered coaster is the same system as the outstanding Arthur at Europa. It ingeniously combines theming, storyline, and outdoor suspended spinning action.

Is Decepticoaster not an exact clone of Hulk? It sure looked it to me when I watched a POV.

This is what I am super stoked for! A good friend of mine has been over there for almost two years getting the park ready and this was one of the rides he was working on. The pics and videos I have seen over the past few months make this ride look really awesome. Jealous that it isn't at the Orlando parks.

Would be tough to have three rides with that same ride system across those two parks. However, Looking at that Camp Jurassic plot with that pitiful capacity Pteranadon Flyers as a prime spot. It would make JP/Jurassic World densely packed with attractions, but we've seen sillier moves by the Orlando parks previously.

Honestly don't see it happening in the short(er) term. Universal obviously has their hands full with Epic Universe and the post Covid design changes that are happening. Add to that the near certain re-do of Marvel Super Hero Island and (parts of/all of) Toon Lagoon at some point, so who knows what they've got the stomach for.

It appears they smoothed out the transitions on inversions. Less snap, conceivably to make it more palatable to the masses.

Yeah, it is clear it's a more "tamed" version with many of the snappy elements modified to be smoother.

The show building for Jurassic World Adventure is the largest in Beijing, similar in size to Spiderman at Islands of Adventure. It would not fit in the Jurassic Park section of IOA now that they built Skull Island on the expansion pad there.

RCMAC, the Jurassic World inverted coaster is indeed the same ride system as Arthur at Europa Park.

I disagree. Looking at Universal and Disney, both companies have the same/similar ride systems already duplicated in their parks. Plus if someone isn't gonna ride Transformers because they don't care about the IP but would ride something like Jurassic World, they would never know the system is the same. But at the same time I like both Transformers and Spider Man because they are still fun despite being the same type of system, but a unique offering.

I couldn't care less about Transformers, but it's a cool ride. I love the JP franchise, and if they used the ride system for a third Orlando ride for some dinos I'd be on board!

The hybrid 3D projection with a moving motion base is a pretty solid system. I do get a little fatigue though with 3D glasses at Universal. Some of the rides are better than others.

I mean at the end of the day I am still waiting for a Coasterbuzz after hours event for Fast & Furious Supercharged ERT.

We call Universal “3D Jostle You til You’re Sick Land”. For short.

I always call those rides "Shake You in a Box" and "Shake You in a Box 3d."
