There were nothing but good vibes emanating from Undercover Boss this week, as Joel Manby, CEO of Georgia-based Herschend Family Entertainment, toured some of the various amusement parks in disguise and found smiling employees that gave 110% for their jobs.

I think Carrie is right on. If the CEO is doing it "because she deserved it" and not "because we're on TV" then shouldn't other single moms with more kids be knocking down his "oh so concerned about the plight of the worker" door?
The point is not whether or not she got the raise. The point is that the CEO claimed she deserved it because of a) her need and b) her work ethic. If those are truly the two criteria, he's going to be giving out a lot more raises.
Hobbes: "What's the point of attaching a number to everything you do?"
Calvin: "If your numbers go up, it means you're having more fun."
But, it's really nobody's business who gets a raise except for that employee and his/her boss. And therein lies the problem with reality shows like these...
Yeah. It really bad manners to ask a coworker how much they make or how much their last raise was. Everywhere that I have ever worked, it has been an unwritten rule.
I wish my boss would give me raises based on my needs and work ethic. I'd be a wealthy man by now.

As a state institution, Michigan publishes the pay rates of each of its employees every year---at least for the salaried employees, and possibly for the hourly ones as well. I've never bothered to look, so I don't know how accessible it is, but I hear it's even available in electronic form now.
