tunnels

Tunnels are *very cool on rides like Holiday World's
Legend/Raven, PKD's Grizzly, SFNE's Superman, SFMM's Goliath, Knoebels Phoenix/Twister, BGT's Kumba, and even though I thought the ride was terrible, PKI's Beast had a very nice first drop tunnel.

However, I hate those asinine ''tubes'' some parks have on rides like on Steel Force, Magnum, and Millennium Force. If you're gonna put in a sorry excuse for a tunnel like that, why even bother?
What's up with the tunnel on Wild Thing. It just looks stupid. It appears that is contains a bunny hill even that it just looks like a box, so I guess that could be a sweet 'hidden' effect. But it just looks awful.
look i think it is like this, some rides use tunnels and they work and others use them and they don't. like the beast, by far the best use of tunnels in coasters, and it works cause it doesn't have to many or to little. same for magnum, the tunnels work, bur on rides like the ledgend, it has to way to many tunnels, and none of them work
i'm sorry if i made anyone mad with me knocking the legend, i just don't like it, it tryed to copy off the beast and failed at it.

I always love sitting in the back and watching people who are "being brave" by raising their arms, only to yank them back down as soon as the train enters the tunnel. Then once out of the tunnel, up come the arms again. It's funny because those people really think that they will hit their arms on the roof!

How did it try to copy off the beast? I'm not mad or anything, but with so many people on this board with the legend as their #1, i think you are going to have a hard time on trying to selling any negative opinions on the legend.

The day that I spend more time analyzing the rides than screaming my head off like a moron is the day that I hope someone will kick my in the love sausage and tell me not to be a moron. - Jeff
I hate to break it. But you really can touch the insides of tunnels on certain coaster. Like if your hands and not completly vertical. Say up but off to the right. Some guy at pkd rode grizzly. Came off with a red finger. I knew it was true. So keep your hands completly up on wooden coaster tunnels, and not off the side.
I think the best tunnel is, believe it or not, on the log flume at Holiday World. It's pitch black, and you're getting faster and faster! Even though you're really only going like 3 mph, it might as well be 30 in there.
the little tunnel at lightning racer where they take your picture? with the water overhead? Always makes me blink so my ride photo is always me blinking or covering my eyes.

I don't know if I like that or not.
I remember seeing pictures of woodies with the tunnels, I think at Bell's, where it was a snake or a monster or something, looked really 60s-ish. Just today, I was looking on rcdb.com and the Viper at SFAW looks like it has a nice tunnel, up in the air and covering a drop(?).

The tunnel on Apollo's Chariot is cheesy, pop-up or drainpipe tunnels are good, like on Magnum, but that tent business is not cool, IMO. I really enjoy the tunnel on MF where you get your mugshot snapped, nice flash effect. Tents are just no fun, period. Fog, mist, darkness, it's all good stuff.

Wood is the best for tunnels, though. The Grizzly tunnel is awesome, and loud, and puts you somewhere else when you fly out of it. Lots of woodies should have tunnels. I've thought about going to Family Kingdom during the off season and building myself a tunnel on the Swamp Fox(j/k).......

The problem with most of the tunnels I've seen is they're too short and you can see the exit as soon as you get to them. Giant Dipper SCBB works because you can't see where you're going. The third and fourth tunnels on Tremors would be amazing if they were combined into one pitch black element.

Tremors, my 100th coaster.
Ghostrider, stopped counting laps at 100.

How about real mountains? The entire first drop of the Tennessee Tornado is in a tunnel in the side of a mountain, very cool.

And the earlier post about tunnels with a dragon painted around the entrance, go to rcdb and look up Starliner at Miracle Strip Amusement Park. It has one of those tunnels.

Lochness Monster and the Beast (Helix) are my "Fav Tunnels".
Everyones forgetting the Giant Dipper's tunnel at the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Right out of the station you drop to the left then go thru an "S" turn followed by a long straight away to the lift.
One of the best coaster tunnels I've done. :)

Hello, My name is Dan and I'm a coasterholic.
Tunnels are ok but it never scared me
I think the Beast tunnels are the best!!! Especially at night!!!! If they had some fog and evil sounds in them they would scare the bajebus out of the GP!!!

Steel- 1.Millennium Force
Wood- 1.The Beast
"Airtime, how sweet it is!"
I loved the tunnel underneath the boardwalk on the Great White in Wildwood, NJ.

TMTCC, The Legend didn't try to copy The Beast at all. The park had the radical idea of getting roller coaster enthusiasts' ideas on elements of the coaster. The end result involved 4 tunnels and 2 helices (I believe) which is why it is held in such a high status among coaster lovers. Because some of us helped to create it.

Forget the fog, the scary noises. I'm an enthusiast and I still think that thing's coming off the track sometimes! It scares the bajebus out of me to this day. That's why I love it.

The second hill on Magnum is my favorite coaster moment, mostly because of the tunnel. It has a good hand choping effect and makes you feel like you are moving much faster then you are. Then you come out of the tunnel into the great air-time filled third hill.
I don't think adding misting, fox, or strobe lights does anyting for a coaster. In fact, sometimes they are a distraction. I would rather ride the Raven with the mist turned off.
