Trench Coaster? Why only 2?

Look at this picture of Nemesis! scroll down and it's the third from the right.

That has to be one of the most amazing pictures I have ever seen. But I don't get why a ride which is so popular hasn't sprung up in other parks. I know Air and Nemesis are in the ground because of the height restrictions but I would love to see a coaster like that a US park.

P.S.- How much did Nemesis' theming cost, or just the ride in total?

Why? Big, BIG expense. I remember an amazing percentage (like 40-50%) of the cost for nemisis was for groundwork. Sorry I can't remember the exact figure offhand.

Peabody is right, the civil work for something like this is enormous. However, there probably is a cheaper way to do it. (Still not cheap though. You can either build a terrain inverted taking advantage of the existing terrain. I.E. a steel inverted Boulder Dash. Or you can build the ground up around the coaster. This can be done by actually building the ground up, or it can be done the Disney way by building rocks and such out of concrete and fiberglass.

I sure wish I could find an excuse for a business trip to England this summer.

Montu is no means as "trenchy" as Nemesis, but have you ever ridden it? About 1/3 of the time or more you're in trenchs. It adds a lot to the ride, so on something like Nemesis, it must be amazing.

Anyone know how much Nemesis cost? I would love to see a coaster like that behind the log flume at Great Adventure! They really need some well themed rides that are good. Batman the ride has half the themeing it use too plus they stopped working. Skull Mountain is a kiddy coaster which leaves Viper as pretty much the only one.

The trench on Talon going into the Immelan (sp?) is pretty sweet.

You could e-mail Tussaud's...(note: the annual pass is good at all Tussaud's parks, including Parc Asterix, Efteling, Liseberg, AT, Chessington, Thorpe, etc....quite a deal for the "Old World" coaster-buffs).

BTW, Alpie also runs in a trench, for the finale...

Do the little cutouts in the ground below the finale of some B:TRs count as trenches? ;)

I haven't had the pleasure of riding Nemesis yet, but Montu's trenches significantly bettered the ride.

Guys, lets not forget old Montu... The Batwing and most of the second half of the coaster takes place in trenches, it really adds alot to the ride... Take a look at one of the many trench photos.

I think when I said "Trench" coaster, I used the wrong word. "Built below the average surface level of the park" sounds better. /: )

Nemesis cost £10 million (about $15 million). It was built in 1994. Oblivion cost £12 million (about $16.5 million) and was built in 1998. Air cost £12 million ($16.5 million).

Oblivion is a very short coaster, but it dives about 100 feet down underground. Considering it was built 4 years earlier than Air and cost the same, you can imagine that a very large percentage of the cost was digging out the ground.
