Travel Channel's Thrill Factor brings former Mythbusters hosts to theme parks

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The Thrill Factor television show debuting this week on the Travel Channel lets theme park fans get their science on while screaming their heads off. The 10-part series starting Wednesday at 8 p.m. explores the science behind roller coasters, thrill rides, water slides and other extreme experiences using engineering, physics and biomechanics. The new 30-minute show is hosted by Kari Byron and Tory Belleci.

Kari's always been hot, but I might have gone with Grant instead of Tory. Tory's more TV-friendly, but a little hipster, whereas Grant seemed to be more of the brains/engineering.

As always, opinions posted here do not necessarily reflect those of station management,

Glad I saw this in time. THis should be a fun show. I miss these guys now that they're gone from MB. Tory was always Boogies (our son) favorite. I think he identifies with his general silliness. And falling off his bike.

Grant was definitely more nerd. Kari is a huge nerd too, which is part of the reason I think dude nerds love her.

Yes, "part" of the reason <cough>FHM</cough>. :)

I can think of 2 more reasons.

I liked Kari, it's a shame they got rid of that team on Mythbusters but glad she got a new show.

If I never watch this again, I'll be fine.

I thought it was a decent show.

I didn't watch it, but I could apply this thought to pretty much every coaster-based show that's ever aired on the Travel Channel.

Stumbled onto it (wasn't looking for it) Kari needs to back off on the caffeine on these shoots........

We watched the first of the 2. 2nd one is recorded but I won't see it for a few days. I'm interested though because it features Thunderbird, which i have yet to ride but really want to.

My opinion is that it was terrible. First of all, they were only on location and riding ONE of the 3 rides featured on the show. Everything else they talked about was only shown via stock footage. This was made more disappointing by the fact that as soon as they showed the waterslide, Boogie said to me "Dad, you're going to get to see Kari in a bikini!" No such luck. (So the question becomes, do they actually visit HW in the next ep to ride Thunderbird, or do they just use stock footage again?)

The science that they did talk about felt like it was shoehorned in just so they could call it a "science" show. Lastly, it's clear that these 2 were only chosen because of their status as former Mythbusters. They felt out of their element trying to fake the fear and nervousness of riding a drop ride that 8 years olds can ride.

Yeah, that's a pretty good summary.

1. I hate how the hosts of these shows always over-act the fear thing.

2. If I was a 9 year old with no knowledge of coasters or the science behind them, I would've STILL felt like they were dumbing it down.

3. This confirmed the Kari Byron effect for me. She wasn't even the most attractive host on the show.

Yes, they did ride Thunderbird.

I never thought Kari was attractive.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

I Googled her today (yeah, yeah, get yer minds outta the gutter...) to get an idea of what she looked like. She's cute. I've seen cuter.

I finally got to watching these. I thought they were pretty solid. It was a good mix of science and technical stuff, and probably excessive guitar driven production music. But compared to the crap they were putting out a few years ago, these were good.

Finally watched the 2nd one, at HW. Correct me if I'm wrong, but one of the girls on the Girls vs boys segment looked a lot like the daughter who was interviewed in Jeff's documentary. Is this correct? If so, I'm not sure how someone who helped build the ride, and has probably ridden it hundreds of times can provide an accurate representation of typical rider responses to coasters.

Once again, besides the HW portion, it was all stock footage. And TPR footage at that.

I'll probably keep watching, but mostly because my son likes it. And because rollercoasters.

Lauren, Leah and Matt (the GM) were all in there, yes.
