Screamscape also has been warning about the removal of Rebel Yell for a while now, well before this announcement.Kings Dominion even extended their water park on the other side of Rebel Yell. So seeing that it can be done, because it has been done, I doubt that "expanding the water park" is really the reason the ride is being removed.
There isn't much room next to Thunder Road though. It pretty much runs right next to Carowinds blvd.
I found a photo from this awesome website that shows that there is more room on the other side of Rebel Yell (I mean Thunder Road. Thanks, RCMAC.) than you might think.

You know there's always another reason.
"We don't want a big, honking, noisy-ass coaster running through the middle of our new waterpark."
You mean Thunder Road.
When I was there a few weeks ago I stayed at the Clarion and there was a clear view of the park from my room on the tenth floor. What I thought was strange is how far away from the rest of the park Thunder Road's turn around seemed to be. And now the awesome pic supplied by Travis bears that out, and it's clear to see the space between is water park. Which, by the way, seems sprawling enough. If TR is to go for more slides, it almost seems like over-kill on the waterpark side. (however, I imagine waterparks are an even bigger draw the farther south one goes. It probably gets just packed with people on a hot, hot summer day).
So, if the famed ride is doomed, there's plenty of land for not only the slides but other good stuff as well.

I bet it was that kid. The one who says "cooster".
It was a kid about 3 year older than me but he doesn't pronounce coaster "cooster." What youtuber does that?
(Insert funny signature here.)
I think you are referring to CoasterStudios? If you are he probably just got lucky.. I mean it's not like his prediction was that Cedar Point was going to add a Polercoaster* in 2015. Oh wait he did..
*Fixed
"Pollercoaster?" What, you have to vote to get on?
The amusement park rises bold and stark..kids are huddled on the beach in a mist
