Thoughts on RCT2, not that there is such a thing.

I think that we will see a RCT2.  But not any time soon.  You have a flood of new gaming systems coming out, several new and powerful video graphics cards, a new edition of Windows, and a slow market for the sales of XP and new systems.  With the resounding success of the first three RCT products, the core of which remains a top five selling game product, there just isn’t any pressure to follow-up quickly.  The current product only continues to develop a more and more massive following, which they won’t want to cut short before its time.  The vast base of users, dictates somebody will produce a sequel.  The question is timing, and what to do with it.  What happens will have much to do with whatever Chris Sawyer wants to do, or how able Hasbro/Atari can reach in and take it over.  An excellent game designer, he has shown some resistance to tossing in lots of extra features.  Many of us wish the game had most the bells and whistles other games such as Age of Empires has.  But overall, Sawyer has produced a well crafted game with solid design and game play, and he has an unusually direct roll with the games development.  I think the game has reached, or more accurately, started out at its limit.  As DarkHelmet demonstrates, you can do some things off of the basic data, to create a true 3D experience.  However, unless Sawyer hands much of the development work over to others, we might not see a truly major leap forward, at least, not quickly.  And if they seek to release on more than one platform, it’ll be longer still.
The wish list is certain to be much longer than the actual release ever provides for.  They know they can milk the title for several expansions, so I wouldn’t look for a scenario editor.  Graphics can be improved greatly, which I would expect as part of improving game play.  Assuming the game comes out a year or more from now, you can model expectations on what kind of PC power a Pentium 4, 1.5 GHz system, with a currently mid-level graphics card might provide.  I’d expect some retooling, but no complete rebuild of the basic game.  Maybe a new game engine, that can accept imported game files.  More land to build on.  More views, though not first person in nature.  First person game riding features are to me, a gimmick whose time has not yet come.  I could see it come to this game in the context of a separate feature.  But to me, unless the surrounding park is modeled in detail, it’s a waste.  A web tie-in would be nice, but that would require many major changes to the basic game unless they keep it non-interactive.  I could see people visiting a park online, or downloading it, and being able to walk through the gardens, ride the rides, and see the sights.  That brings me back to what would really be a must for any “ride the coaster” feature, the ability to see what is around you accurately.  Finally, some action outside of the gates, even if its not under our control, would be nice to see.

In the end, somebody might come along and create a better game.  Maxis tried, but tried to produce a game with a totally different feel, built on top of a graphics gimmick.  If Microsoft hired somebody, they could do a game in-line with what most folks here want to see.

I’d just settle for a larger map, many more features, shops, decoration, employees, and a simple scenario editor.

dude, who needs that when we've got RCT3D (coming soon)

I like the ride a ride feature but wouldn't it be awesome if you could hire real rollercoaster creators (arrow, morgan, B&M) and for an additional amount of money, they would design a suitable coaster based on the amount of money your willing to spend.
yeah, that would be cool. don't forget intamin!

I personally think it is interesting to dig up old relics like this. It shows the way that thinking has changed.
THANK YOU!!!!!

CedarPointNut.... you have got to be severly retarded to purposely dig up topics that are at least a year or two old.

All the topics wind up getting closed anyway because they are... to be honest... retarded and outdated... so what is your point? To be Jack-Ass-of-the-Year?

Emmm....do we have to be tht hard on him? It's not he called us all retards.

dexter - How in the world does having friends have to do with digging up old topics? For all we know, you could be some overweight 13-year-old who has nothing better to do than be a hypocrit. Do us ALL a favor and shut up.

Edit : BTW CPnut, sorry for my other comment.

OMG big shocker!!! Somebody apologized on the internet!
