Thirteen roller coaster debuts at Alton Towers with vertically dropping track

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Thirteen, despite having an almighty mountain of expectation to climb, does not disappoint. It's fast, it's frightening and it makes you scream. It is also accompanied by clever viral marketing, with builders and organisers telling us that not only is the terrifying Thirteen built on an unearthed ancient burial site - why weren't we told about this when the late Corkscrew ride was in its place? - but that the very name of the ride itself is intended to cast an irreversible spell on all Alton Towers' aficionados, making certain they will visit again.

I'll spare you all my writing parody coaster-themed lyrics to "You Gotta Get a Gimmick" from Gypsy. :)

Show tunes? And I thought I was gay! ;)

^You don't HAVE to like show tunes if you're gay ;) And vice-versa, I would think.

I was thinking about all this anticapointment over 13... and can't help but think how much more interesting it looks than just about every B&M that was built in the last 10 years.

Is Coaster Demon/B&M the new Moosh/SFMM?

I like to think of Coaster Demon/B&M as the new Lost Kause/Qbot :)

While I agree, Jeff, that an an over-marketed ride doesn't make it a sucky ride (Diamondback, imo), Th13teen still looks sucky to me.

Can you imagine going to the park to ride waht was advertised as the scariest coaster ever created only to experience that instead? Cry wolf much, Alton Towers?

Edit - Moosh snookered one in on me...

Run away, Demon. From this point on you will only know as "the crazy one". ;)

Personally, it might be interesting to see faceless wraiths who look like "hunched monks with large cossacks pulled over their heads." Cool, a coaster themed to Taras Bulba! An authentic Russian Mountain? (I think she meant to say cassocks, but technically they don't have hoods either.)

Well, I'm not very flaming, so I have to fulfill my stereotype quota by doing a lot of theatre. ;)

I personally don't have a problem with gimmicky coasters either. I rather enjoy Italian Backstunt Job, for example. Although I miss having the splash effect at the end.

Yeah, I suppose that works too. :)

RatherGoodBear: Actually, I was hoping for "hassocks", making it the first coaster you can ride in a kneeling position.

I know you love me Moosh.

I wanted to say snuck, but it was underlined in red dots, which means that it really isn't a word according to Firefox (even though it really is a word), so instead of taking chances, I went with a more realler ( ;) ) sounding word, which really didn't mean exactly what I wanted it to mean. :p

I guess I do mention it a big much ;) Well, it's true, ain't it?

I think we all have our stuff we stand by - for me it's love of old Anton loopers and 'classic' woodies/tiredness of B&M sameness...

For some people, it's love of q bots/cut it line stuff, or the hate of it (that would be me).

Wow! I just watched the POV of Intimidator on youtube :) Looks amazing and steep, can't wait to ride that. A friend who was at media day told me it was good, but he said there was a lack of bunny hops and the end.

So I'm having to explain to him that B&M 'doesn't do' bunny hops. No speed hils/bunny hills. Just camel back hills. over and over and over and over...

Really, it really does look good. I've never been to Carowinds and haven't ridden one of the new staggered seating B&M's. Hope I can go soon.

AND I can't wait to ride 13 as well. I am more looking forward to that to be honest (not that I have plans to ride it soon!)

Intimidator has lots of bunny hops...they're just larger than your friend is used to :)

Hopefully without the St. Olaf stories. :)

I'd say Thir3een is an interesting ride concept at least. Not many people would expect that sensation on a roller coaster. That being said, I don't think it's anything for which they would need younger riders to sign a waiver to ride...

I call Cedar Point my home park even though I live in the Chicago Suburbs.

Did I ever tell you about the Great Herring War?
