The UNABRIDGED guide to being a coaster.

I'm pretty tired of the bickering between people claiming that certain rides are, or are not roller coasters. I do not want this to turn into a flame war, I wish for this thread to explain what all coasters have in common.

In an earlier thread, someone claimed that Superman: The Escape was a roller coaster because of the following:

kRaXLeRidAh said:

"A roller coaster is a type of amusement park mechanism that runs on any type of railing where a pair of wheel assembly are in equal placement in a conventional manner on both sides of the rail no matter how many sets of assembly there are. And all roller coasters, at any one point on the course uses gravity as a propulsion. Most importantly, all roller coasters cars position riders at a perpendicular angle to the track at any one point of the course. Free-fall rides never position riders perpendicular to the track at any point, but have rider's backs parallel to the 'track'. Stealth at one point has riders perpendicular to the track at one point even though it is a new innovative twist on the modern day coaster, before it tilts riders parallel to the track, riders were upright perpendicular in the station. Free-fall rides never do that. Superman: The Escape fits the roller coaster standards."

I think this is a great explaination; however, the part about freefall rides not positioning riders is not true. When you board a free-fall ride, you are perpendicular to the track. To me, there is no way to consider a freefall as not being a coaster. It is a full circuit, the major source of propulsion is gravity, and it also has a lift. I believe that free-fall rides are coasters.

Paul Ruben of "Park World" magazine claims that in order for it to be a roller coaster, "It in part must use gravity and run on rails." This statement can be thrown out since we know of water flumes.

The reason many people say that S:TE is not a roller coaster is because of the park claiming that Goliath was the tallest last year. This to me suggests that the park doesn't believe it is a roller coaster, or it was just a marketing ploy to get itself into the record books.

The more revolutionary rides to be designed, the more amendments that must be added to the rules of being a coaster. This list may grow larger and larger throughout the years, and I believe it will.

If you have any other facts that make a ride a roller coaster, please share it. However, if all you want to do is post something to make people angry and start a flame war, please don't post it.

We really don't need to go through this again...

If it walks like, smells like, feels like... it is.
