The pronunciation of Kraken

Well, I stand corrected. Thanks for the info Lord Gonchar!
LG, "crock-en?" That doesn't follow "kra-ken" which means it would be "cro-ken?" What about "a" in father? Wouldn't that make it "Kray-ken?" Which is how I pronounce it.

From Dictionary.com; http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=Kraken Pronunciation "Kray-ken."

Top ten most popular sites for "Kraken;" http://dictionary.directhit.com/dictionary/search.php?qry=Kraken The third hit is on the Kraken we know!

Just my contribution to this interesting thread. *** This post was edited by Taipan on 6/1/2001. ***

You pronounce 'father' as "fayther?" if so, you have some bigger things to worry about than the pronunciation of Kraken. ;)

Jman
;) Nup, this is too confusing for me. Looks like there'll never a true definition along with "Is S:TE a coaster?"

Good night, I'm off to bed. (It's 2:30am Saturday Sydney time!)

You lost me, Taipan.

The link you give shows the exact same pronunciation as Webster's. It has the "a" with the two dots above it.

Try this link:

http://www.dictionary.com/help/key.html#pronunciation

If it were pronounced "kray-ken" the letter "a" in the pronunciation would look like this: â

That's a long "a" sound, such as in the word "pay".

The "ä" symbol is pronounced similar to a short "o" sound. Like "father".

Are you telling me you pronounce it "fay-ther"? Yikes!

Basically your link give the first pronunciation as "crock-en" and the second as "crack-en".

At any rate, "cray-ken" is totally incorrect. *** This post was edited by Lord Gonchar on 6/1/2001. ***
Forgive me but Cray-ken sounds gross
whos cares how its pronounced, does it make a difference?
Before my trip to Florida last December when I heard the ride name pronounced for the first time by the locals, I thought it was Crak-en, but they said Crack-en, so I think that's right.

I agree that the name is not important regarding how it is pronounced, a lot of people have different pronunciations for many coasters. For instance in England we say DUALing Dragons, but in America, I heard them calling it DULEing Dragons.

Hmmm....
After careful consideration and longwinded arguments with many other lecturers, I have decided that the correct pronunciation of "Kraken" should be done in a Georgia Accent, as done by someone from Wales, with the emphasis on the "A", k (as in the K in jumper) r (as in the r in bagpipes) AAAA, k (every way except the k in jumper) and e and N however you want.
In total, it shoudl do k-r-AAAAAA-k-gjhasgjfgah, with a lisp and a limp, on the left shoulder
That's cos dumb yanks can't pronounce things. Simple things. Like Tomato (stupid keyboard) *** This post was edited by AC Antaeus on 6/1/2001. ***
For the record, I pronounce "father" as, well... "father"! My bad. This is getting pointless, there was a debate a while ago on how to pronounce "rollercoaster"!! Turn off ya PC & go out & ride 'em. *** This post was edited by Taipan on 6/2/2001. ***
Enough!!! This is getting old.
