I've ridden Vortex, Corkscrew, Steel Phantom, Viper, etc., many times, and nothing comes close to the pain of that curve before the block brakes on Shockwave.
Of course, the Curve of Death feels like being massaged by a nubile Asian prostitute when compared to Son of Beast.
Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of riding Steel Phantom or Shockwave. Here's my list of Arrow multiloopers and their respective rankings (out of 119 steel):
14 - Drachen Fire
15 - Tennessee Tornado
33 - Dragon Mountain
30 - Loch Ness Monster
40 - Anaconda
50 - Canyon Blaster (Adventuredome)
54 - Great American Scream Machine
56 - Vortex (PKI)
66 - Carolina Cyclone
80 - Corkscrew (CP)
100 - Python (BGT)
101 - Corkscrew (MB Pavilion)

Also when I went to PKI 3 years ago Vortex wasn't the most painful ride there. I will give that title to Scooby's Ghoster Coaster (Too tight of a fit and I was stuck in the car geting out) followed by Son of Beast (I was stapled hard on this ride).

I can't believe no one has mention the Corner of Death on SFGAm's late Shockwave.Of course, the Curve of Death feels like being massaged by a nubile Asian prostitute when compared to Son of Beast.
Yeah! OUche!!! That's what they modified when they built the GASMachine at Great Adventure the following year. That corner was actually GREAT if you 'rode it right.' Really intense. But really horrible if you didn't know 'how to do it'.
The Shockwave was really bad in the double loops. Lots of shaking and vibrating. Gawd, Ron Toomer... how could you do that?
What was really funny is... when Shockwave opened, it was run for the first few weeks with ZERO mid course brakes. It was hilarious. The corkscrews would wobble after a train went through. (Arrow supposedly told GAmerica NOT to run that ride like that. A few years later, extra angled track ties were welded into the vertical loops <also on GASM and Viper at MMountain>)
The Steel Phantom was pretty bad too. During the ACE coaster con in '91, I gotta couple brakeless rides. Like Shocker brakeless, it was hilarious! It went through the loop-boomerang, cork so fast, you were completely stuck-air-tight to your seat. If there was headbanging, it was all too quick to notice.
ARROW coasters are the true 'PLUG-N-PLAY' in the industry. Yeah, a corkscrew would go good there. Yeah, tilt that vertical loop, it will fit good there :) *** Edited 9/7/2005 4:59:03 PM UTC by J7G3***
Overall though, I think I'm done with Corkscrew at CP. I also remember Viper at MM being pretty rough.
All the way down first drop-Head as far forward as possible.
Immediately into first loop-Head pinned Back
Curve-Head up against right side of restraint
Double loop-Head pinned back
Curve up to block- Head all the way out.
Boomerang- head pinned back
After boomerang to end of ride- Head all the way out
Follow these, and you will find that scream machine can be a truly great coaster. Trust me. I have gotten more than enough banging from that thing
I think the Steel Phantom is my roughest Arrow. The only Arrow looper I will ever ride again is the Loch Ness Monster.
I am a little surprized that noone even mentioned the double loop as being rough. That can have it's rough spots some days too. *** Edited 9/8/2005 4:03:39 AM UTC by "E"Coster Gurl***

As someone who has ridden Great American Scream Machine Tens if not hundreds of times, you begin to get a feel for riding it comfortably. All you have to do is just move your head to the right places at the right times. here is what to do:

that is actually fairly accurate....as a constant rider(and fan)of this legend i believe that being comfortable on this ride.....even in the crowded summers of six flags this ride has no line so i need to thuroghly enjoy it many times in one night...if you ever go to six flags get on this ride........even tho it is in full view of guests you can still get on with little or no wait....if u follow these instructions carefully you'll love this ride....i ride it constantly with the writer of these instructions along with many other rides in the park..including KINGDA KA!!!!!.....once you get the science of the ride down you'll LOVE IT!!!!!

Vortex and PKI. Granted there are some smooth parts on the ride, the rest of it is just rough as heck.
...would the smooth parts happen to be sitting in the station pre-ride & returning following the break run? My chiropractor loves it when I ride Vortex!
