The only thing I want to add is that I do believe there are times where the big companies knowing my every habit can be helpful.
Big scary corporate entity knows I buy product A and Product B on a regular basis. All this time they've had product C that offers all the functionality of A+B in one package. So they let me know about it.
I'm grateful they let me know and now I buy product C and I have a positive outlook towards big scary corporate entity because the pointed me in the right direction.
They didn't trick me. They didn't make me buy anything I didn't need.
But yeah, other than that, matt's doing just fine. :)

I'm not playing this game any more. You know that you are acting like butt holes and yet you keep going and going. Why should I keep taking crap every time I have an opinion that differs from you guys (I sometimes question whether our opinions even differ at all or if you are just trying your hardest to disagree)? I will seriously be having less conversations with you guys from now on.

Whatever. Where did I say making a profit was trickery? And why are trickery and personal responsibility mutually exclusive?
My pioint was that people throw around the "business major" thing like it is some badge of honor that renders anybody else's opinion worthless. Yes, I completely understand that companies are in business to make money. That doesn't mean that I have to help them do it or willingly buy into doodads and marketing schemes to make it easier for them to target products at me.
How about if I substitute the word coerce for trickery? Would that make you feel better?
I like to play tricks with marketing people. I have a network of people who are also disgusted with the excesses of advertising and marketing and we periodically swap those exceedingly annoying shoppers plus cards.
That's the entire point! Unless you feel you are truly being "tricked" or "coerced" by advertising just put the wallet down! You're not being tricked, you are willingly spending money based on the all the information in your brain. If you aren't making good decisions with your money you have no one to blame but yourself.
That being said there is such a thing as "false advertising" and misleading ads and marketing. That's not what we're talking about here. If business is engaging in that, we have a government and Better Business Bureaus and state Attorneys General that are supposed to take care of that sort of thing. If they aren't or can't that's a whole 'nother can of worms and a completely different argument.

If you're being serious about this, you're even more bonkers than I thought. I once threw that out there (that Jeff hires people like me and Gonch to make threads go longer and increase revenue) jokingly. 100% jokingly. So if you're being for real here, you're ability to conspiracy theorize is pretty amazing.
Look...nobody is making you post here and I think maybe you're finally realizing that. If you're really going to get personally offended by someone arguing against your points then you're probably in the wrong place. I categorically disagree with your perception of the nature of advertising is...so I'm going to explain to you and everybody else in the thread and everybody else reading why.
I believe the phrase is "If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen" and on the same front, "If you don't want someone to disagree with your opinion, don't post it." That's what the board is here for, discussion.
You have a pattern of it, Dex. You constantly come into threads and play Mr. Victim every chance you get. You think Jeff picks on you, you think I pick on you, you think Gonch picks on you, you think Playa picks on you, you think advertisers are trying to "trick" you, there have been threads in the past when you've played a little socio-economic class thing and thought people were picking on you because you weren't in some sort of income bracket. It's like the only card you have to play here, and it always boils do to this "woe is me" attitude that easily manifests itself into really malformed arguments.
Disagreeing with you is not disrespecting you! The passive-aggressive nonsense you have habit of putting in your signatures is really remarkable. You now have this one, obviously in reaction to this thread, you had one I believe as a thinly veiled reaction to Playa, and in another thread informed us three times you had a "least favorite" poster but then proudly announced you weren't going to tell us who it was. Advertising has weasled its way into so many aspects of popular culture that it is often hard to distinguish between "reality" and the fantasy world created by corporate BS. Look at how much time and energy people spend debating the merits of Coke vs Pepsi! All I'm saying is that I'm not interested in assisting them colonize society anymore then they already have.
