Can you think of another instance at a park where the little wooden or steel coaster is better than its bigger counterpart?
Blue Streak > Mean Squeak
Maggie (not that its all that little) > Millie
Beast > SOB
SFWOA Big Dipper > damn near everything else in the park
I could go on. So yeah, it happens all the time.

If the shoe fits, find another one.
IMO The Carolina Goldrusher is better than thunder road.

Now, for my addition, and I don't even expect to be flamed...this time! ThunderHawk beats Herc by about 6 spins to one, based solely on my only visit to the park...now for the controversy...I did *slightly* prefer Phoenix over Twister...

I will, however, disagree with Raven. I'll take The Legend any day. No contest.
To pick another set of smaller being better than bigger, I'll take Kennywood's Jack Rabbit over the Thunderbolt any day. What? Am I insane? Well, that's possible.... but seriously, T-bolt just doesn't do much for me.
ProgRay
But there is NO WAY you're going to get me to say Raven over The Legend...NO WAY...NO DAY!

I hate to break it to you but people who didn't like Legend before are probably not going to like it that much more with PTCs and those of us who already loved it are more than a little concerned about how it's going to run with the new trains.
People who prefer Raven over Legend like rides with airtime as opposed to rides with laterals and the "out of control" sensation. PTCs are not going to make the laterals go away but they might buffer them down just enough to make the coaster mortal. I've gone on record before as saying I think it was a mistake because I just don't see how it's going to make the ride *more* insane and I *can* see how it could make it more tame.
As far as the main subject goes though: Many, many rides are like this in my experience. Just out of the ones that haven't been listed yet I could add:
- Riverside Cyclone over SROS @ SFNE. Controversial? Sure, but I'm a twister fan and the Riverside is one of the best and out of control coasters ever designed. SFNE might not have much going for it in guest services but these two are absolute stormers with the Cyclone nudging Supes in my book.
- The Wildcat @ HP over the Lightning Racer. Both are twisters but the Wildcat is a much more "nasty" ride. It throws you around, rips you out of your seat and leaves you wanting more while the LR is a much more tame ride.
- The Wild Beast over the Mighty Canadian Minebuster @ PCW. There was a point in time before all the reprofiles and train changes that the Minebuster was amazing. That time is now past and the often slow and rampy Minebuster can't hold a candle to the more powerful Wild Beast.
- Zach's Zoomer over Shivering Timbers. Nah, just kidding :-)

I like your reasoning (about how the PTCs will affect Legend), but I prefer Raven because it has more of everything, while Legend just seems to be only laterals. I do really like Legend, don't get me wrong, but I think that the layout of Raven is far superior, and more fun. Personal preference, obviously.
OK .. as for litter brother liked over bigger brother, I'll say that I like Demon more than Shockwave at Six Flags Great America. You can also chalk me up as another who prefers Viper over Eagle. Although when the Eagle brakes are turned down, it's a tough call.

In my personal taste I am worried that the PTC's will take away from what made the ride exciting to me. I like to be tossed and dividers and them ratchets are painful.
That Ratchet of PTC's Hits almost exactly the same place on the thigh that the G trains do. You really think thats going to change?.
Chuck, possitive he will still like Legend, after all Jeff says it will be faster as the PTC's are much heavier.

Most people would agree that IB's Cornball Express is better than the bigger woodie in the park, Hoosier Hurricane.
One HUGE reason Cornball is so fun it BUZZ BARS!
Chuck, awaiting to see how HH runs with all the trackwork it is getting :) Also can't wait to ride LCOSM

At SFGAm, Viper is 10 times better than American Eagle, Demon is 5 times better than Shockwave. In comparisions of not-quite the same type of coasters, Batman is way better than Raging Bull.
At BGT, with another not-quite the same type of coasters, depending on the kind of ride you're looking for, Scorpion can be as good, if not better than Kumba from my experience. It depends if you want a bit of roughness or silky smooth.
