The Buzz Poll.

It was just 60% do and 40% don't rank their favorite rides. I personally am one that doesn't rank my favorite rides. Every ride has a different feeling, and although some are favorites its just too hard to place a number next to it. Especially in the steel category. My personal favorite wooden coaster is Lightning Racer(Thunder a little better then Lighting.) or would that be my top 2 wooden coasters if you count them separate? That's one of the reasons it's so hard for me to rank.
that's the same way I am.  I like certain coasters over others, but I don't hand out numbers.  the most of a label that I put on a coaster is: "re-ride once today" and "re-ride as many times as I can today".

Well, you could separate all the coasters you've been on into different categories i.e. favorite inverted, favorite hyper etc. That would make it easier to find favorites (until you've been on hundreds of coasters, like some people around here).

I know what I like, and I know what are better than others if I'd strike up a conversation about it, but I think that having an actual list is rather silly.

Sept. 11th 2001, Slayer released God Hates Us All. The song "Disciple" uncannily describes the events of that day, as well as the antrax letters that followed.

On the way back from a park when I'm bored I usually end up making a list.
There are just too many apples and oranges comparisons to rank coasters.  How do you compare say Legend and Magnum.  They are both great, but they are so different it's jsut not realistic to rank.
I agree Jim. I can never decide which Six Flags Worlds Of Adventure coaster is my favorite. X-Flight, S:UE, BKF and Villain are all so different, I just can't say one is better than the other.

....that wasnt so hard was it?

Personally, I dont buy the whole "apples and oranges" argument. Just tell me, do you want an apple or an orange d@mnit! It's all fruit.

I think people that say that just dont feel strongly about many rides....and that's okay. Admittedly, for me, aside from like the top 20 and the bottom 3 all the rest are just in there. But it's not hard for me to name favorites.

I agree with everyone who said it is like comparing apples to oranges. I don't think you can rate every coaster that you have been on. Yeah, of course I have some favorites, like MF and S:ROSat SFA and Phoneix at Knoebels and such but they are just some of my favorites. I can probably come up with a top 3 steel and top 3 wood but that is about it. I don't think I could rank every coaster I ever rode. They are just too different to compare. Whatever is a good ride and is fun for me is great and that is it.

I agree with everyone that said about being too many coaster types to rank one better than another. I have my favorites, but it is really hard to put a number next to it.

I agree with 2Hostyl in that you can certainly rank coasters of different types. For instance, I don't like mine trains. You can say "Thunder Mountain is so different from Legend, you can't compare the two" and I'll say, "I had a better time on Legend than on Thunder Mountain. There I just compared them."

On the other hand, I choose not to compare certain types of rides, because I liked Hypersonic for some reasons, I liked Batwing for other reasons, and I liked S:RoS for other reasons and I had fun on all of them in different ways.

So, I have my handful of favorite hypers (MF, PR, SFOS@NE, AC) and my handful of other cool rides (Batwing, Hypersonic, S:TE) and everything else just kinda gets lumped into the "pretty good" category.

The legend lives!

I rank them, but I keep the list on an excel spreadsheet so I can change the ranks and resort often.   Seems that the most recent coasters I ride always wind up high on the list.

What I notice is this... Certain coasters stay at the number 1 spot (Phoenix for wood, Steel Force for steel), and certain ones stay in the "favorite spots" (but can change order)... certain ones stay in the "They're okay spots" (but can change order), certain ones stay in the "Not my favorite but I would re-ride spots" (but in different orders), one stays in the "ONLY if it is an absolute walk on... wouldn't waste my time otherwise spot" (BatWing), and one remains in the "Least favorite, wouldn't re-ride it if you paid me, thank goodness they tore at least the most painful parts of it and kept the best spot" (Steel Phantom).

I don't rank, and here's why:

I've been on WAY, WAY too many.  Back when I did rank, I had a seperate steel and woodie list, which is pretty much the norm.  The problem is that if I compiled up my top 20 steel list, there would be tons and tons of coaster that are 100% awsome, but wouldn't be on the list.  I mean, Back when I first rode Alpengiest I ranked it as like, my number 4 or something.  Problem is, now, it wouldn't be in the top 10.  Has Alpie gotten worse?  No, in fact I think its gotten better since then.  I just think the whole thing's silly and trivial.  I know what rides I like, I know what rides I LOVE, and that's all that matters to me.

Some days I want an apple, some days I want and orange, both taste good but I'm not about to confuse them.  I'll be happy to talk for hours about coasters that I like and don't like; and about what I like and don't like about each coaster.  I still find that ranking coasters just doesn't make sense.
However I can't resist watching a top 10 show on the tube and telling you why I disagree with their rankings.

I don't rank them anymore, unless I'm forced to in order to make a point. In other words, I'm much more likely to rank B&M inverts or CCI coasters rather than random steel or wood coasters. It's more fun and interesting to me trying to decide why I like Legend a bit more than Ghostrider, or Raptor compared to Batman:The Ride. But to compare my favortite Intamin to my favorite B&M is where the apples and oranges come into play for me.

Have you ever considered that maybe it's not the park that's the problem, but YOU?

I can safely say that some coasters are "better" than others...IMO.  And I can say, for myself, these coasters are better than these other coasters.  But to say that THIS coaster is #14, and that is #72, and this other is #112, I honestly couldn't do that on my BEST day.  Overall, I'll take an S:RoS over darn near anything else, but I can't say a marathon on Ghostrider or Raven or Phoenix would hurt my feelings any, either...it's not really a wod vs. steel thing, it's more of a "mood", I guess...noting, of course,  I'm "In a metal mood" (like Pat Boone, LMAO) not nearly as often....
-----------------
I don't have ranks down the line 1,2,3,4 5 . Instead of trying to compare 2 directly, I rate the coasters separately then see where they fall next to each other. I got this idea from some GP peeps when they were grading a ride. What it comes down to is thinking how fun a ride is. Example....

Magnum-Magnum was great! (A+)
Villain- Villain was great! except for the a few weak spots.(A)

So Magnum would fall ahead of Villain in my rankings, even though I did not compare them directly. I don't say Magnum is better than Villain because "X." This still doesn't define were they sit though. In reality my ranking would look something like 1, 1, 3, 3, 3, 5, 5, 5, etc. if I were to think it all out.

-----------------
Don't, Don't Don't believe, Don't believe the hype.

I know my favorites steel and favorite wood but thats about it, I can prolly narrow it down to about 15 coasters but ask me to rank em and I dont htink I can do it. Magnum and Millie are the only ones I can.  I mean I can't possibly choose between Raven, Legend, and The Beast, I love em all.
