Sword in the Stone at Disney

Does anyone know if you can actually pull it out? I saw it happen on a TV show once. We all know TV doesn't lie. ;)

If so did anyone ever pull it out or see someone do it?

It does not come all the way out, just far enough to look like it could. It moves maybe 8 inches or so.
Theres a sword in a stone at disney????

Restraining orders are just another way of saying I love you.

They had a ceremony starring Merlin from Sword in the Stone, the animated Disney movie. He picks a child out of the crowd, and they pull the sword out a ways. Then they become the king of Disneyland, and get some stuff I think. Merchandise or ride priveledges, something like that. At least, that was going on a while back, I'm not sure if the show is still going on at the park anymore.
I saw it, Coasterpunk. (in 1999) I think it happens everyday to one lucky kid. Looks fun!

Excellent link!
As of June the show at Magic Kingdom was still happening several times a day. The child that "pulls" the sword from the stone is dubbed "Temporary Ruler of the Realm" since King Arthur is away for part of the day.

Sheesh, I've been to Magic Kingdom more times than I care to admit and I've yanked on that sword even more times than that and I've never seen it come out - I miss all the action!

Dorney Park visits in 2002: 19

A friend of mine pulled it out about fifteen years ago, he got a picture with Merlin after he pulled it out.
You're joking right.

edit: DL or WDW?

It was at DL, they had a show and then Merlin picked kids from the crowd and let them try to pull it out. There were a few people that tried before him, when he tried it came right out.
They have it at both the Magic Kingdom park in FLA and at Disneyland in CA.

A well placed electromagnet could cause the sword to come out or not come out as "The Powers That Be" desire.

It's a very cute ceremony, and sure to make a few kids feel special. IIRC they usually have more than one child try, the one that gets it out is the one that looks least likely too.

It is not as technical as electromagnets.

I would imagine that there is a part of the sword several inches down that is not seen that is a little bit wider than the slot the sword is in. There is likely a latch that can hold this part stationary when engaged. Since this is part of a "staged" event, there would be a button nearby that can retract this latch allowing the sword to be partially removed (up till the "wide" part contacts the inside of the rim of the rock). Then the sword is shoved back in, the latch reset and the process can begin anew.

Simple but effective.
