Does anyone know if you can actually pull it out? I saw it happen on a TV show once. We all know TV doesn't lie. ;)
If so did anyone ever pull it out or see someone do it?

A well placed electromagnet could cause the sword to come out or not come out as "The Powers That Be" desire.
It's a very cute ceremony, and sure to make a few kids feel special. IIRC they usually have more than one child try, the one that gets it out is the one that looks least likely too.

I would imagine that there is a part of the sword several inches down that is not seen that is a little bit wider than the slot the sword is in. There is likely a latch that can hold this part stationary when engaged. Since this is part of a "staged" event, there would be a button nearby that can retract this latch allowing the sword to be partially removed (up till the "wide" part contacts the inside of the rim of the rock). Then the sword is shoved back in, the latch reset and the process can begin anew.
Simple but effective.
