Stealth being moved to Carowinds, Paramount's Great America to put water park in its place

Posted | Contributed by special141

Paramount's Great America today announced the removal of Stealth and the replacement of Boomerang Bay, a new water park. Through no coincidence, Paramount's Carowinds announced the construction of their Vekoma flying coaster for 2004.

Read the press releases from Paramount's Great America and Paramount's Carowinds.

That's true, It doesn't say anywhere that Stealth is being moved to Carowinds. I'm not sure what the stats for stealth are so if the stats that Carowinds states in their release are diffrent from those of Stealth's, then it must be an all new coaster.

However I can't see Stealth just being totally scrapped, maybe PCW will get it instead!

well, if Great America did not have any problems with land like Kings Island and Kings Dominion, then I'm sure there would have been opportunities to see larger attractions come in, but that's not the case. And what's this with Paramount hates the Western U.S., take the sentences above this one, and add the fact that Great America is the ONLY Paramount brand park on the West Coast...

Just 'cause the track length listing is different by a few feet doesn't make it a completely different coaster. The height, inversions and speed listings are exactly the same, and plus, Carowinds could have just added in the extra feet from the storage/transfer track into the total track length. And why would Paramount Parks purchase a new Flying Dutchman for a park when another park is removing one? It's not a coincedence, just FYI.

Stealth is indeed moving to Carowinds. Check out the "extra! extra!" section on the Amusement Today website. They said at the press conference that they don't have a name or theme for it yet. It should be announced soon.

Well PGA may have stolen our swings, but we gott'm back!

Anyhow I kinda disapointed about the anouncement... this means atleast another 2 years until the installment of NTR (;. Well anyhow, I was epecting a custom flyer since the island is basically a giant shapeless hill of overgrowth... seems like it would cost the same just to build a custom rather than bulldozing the island and installing a used mechanical nightmare... it beats Reptar though!

Brings back memories of when Hypersonic was installed then STOLEN away from us... and in the end we got Psycho Mouse.

I for one remember when Carowinds was NOT a Paramount Park and it went way down hill. They sold off alot of attractions I wish were still here along with all the new stuff we got. So, as far as Stealth coming here and getting renamed and rethemed all I can say is great for us and it sucks for PGA. But, PGA is getting a water park with hand me downs from PKI so that PKI can have all new stuff. Man, we are getting like Six Flags. lol All I can say is maybe we all should move to Ohio so we can enjoy NEW stuff.

Does anyone know when the date of removal is? I was really hoping to go on Stealth on my spring break so I could say I have been on all flyers that exist in the world. But if anyone knows when they start the removing process, it would be great if they could post it.

While not exactly the same ride, I've been on X-Flight and I don't quite get the love for the ride. It's interesting in a ride it to say you did kind of way, but not something I'm in any hurry to get on again.

Are Top Gun and Vortex really that mediocre?

DELETED! What time does the water show start?

Jeff,

Vortex = Yes, in my opinion of course (and that of many others), mediocre, and one of my least favorite steel coasters actually heh.

But, Top Gun. Wow. I have only been to Kings Dominion, Kings Island, and Carowinds, but this is my favorite ride of those three parks and I think I can make the statement my favorite in the entire Paramount chain since I can pretty much guarantee I won't like anything better at Canada's Wonderland or Great America. This is a spectacular coaster, and if they added Taxi Jam clones to the park for five straight years I would still go back because Top Gun is just that damn good. Of all the inverteds I've been on I like Top Gun and Raptor well above any of the others.

I agree with Jonathan completely - of all the coasters I've ridden at PKI, PKD and Carowinds - Top Gun is EASILY the best coaster of the bunch. I also don't see anything at PGA or PCW that would be in the same class. It amazes me when the Carowinds enthusiasts complain about not getting anything, since I feel that we have the best steel coaster in the chain, if not best period.

Ok the screenname may indicate bias - but I'm pretty sure I picked it before I had done any of my numerous coaster trips of the last few years. On all of them I fully expected to be blown away by rides, since I figured nothing world-class would be located at Carowinds. I've ridden a few that I like better - Raptor, Georgia Cyclone, Kumba, MF, Apollo and SROS - but after getting a bit more experience under my belt I've come to REALLY appreciate Top Gun that much more. Even if it didn't ride so well, it's one of the most beautiful coasters I've seen anywhere.

Stealth.....hmmm. I've ridden Batwing, and liked it well enough, but it wouldn't be worth it for me to wait in a long line for, so I'm not sure about "New Stealth". Hopefully they'll make some improvements to it to make it a better ride than it was at PGA.

Top Gun is really good, but now that leaves Invertigo and TG as the only real good coasters in the park, I feel. I liked this park when I visited this summer, and I was glad I put it on the list of "to-do", especially for Stealth! I thought it was an awesome coaster and can't for the life of me understand why people don't like these things. Maybe I'm just nuts, but it was definitely the star attraction of the park, and removal after 3 years makes no sense.

Then again, I was checking stats for SFGAdv before I went there last weekend and noticed that Ultra Twister was located there for only 2 years before moving to Astroworld, so its not really unprecedented for a "star" ride to be moved quickly, but I would assume its because there's some sort of structural issue that costs more to fix than to just move it someplace else and market it as a new coaster which will in turn pull in more crowds to offset repair costs.

Too bad, but I guess good, since I liked this Flying Dutchman design much more than the X-Flight version and its a closer drive now.

I have belonged to this site for only 2 years but this si the stupidest thing I have ever hear, I much prefer the B&M flyers but X-Flight was still a lot of fun, so I would natural assume that Stealth would be fun. Why the hell take away your money ride and install a waterpark on a what 4 acre piece of land. The only way this can be a good investment is if the people up in Santa Clara CA are dying for a waterpark or PGA is going to charge even more for it. Privately owned theme parks are so much better, when the chain grows to more than 3 the all go to hell.
Hey ehhh Impulse-ive, we were talking about Top Gun at Carowinds :)

Whoa there, I'm still not seeing why people think this is such a stupid move. Sure, if I was a coaster enthusiast living in Northern California, I'll tell you right now I would be pretty damned pissed off. But, it has become very clear that waterparks are the money for Paramount. These things are a sure bet for drawing crowds. It has always surprised me that the only park in the chain without one was Great America up in California, and now they're finally getting one. While there will no doubt be some people upset about Stealth, this will be a good move in the end for Great America. Not to mention, word coming down the pipe says you guys may be quite happy in 2005 anyway.

Well I do think Paramount is making money off the water parks. 1. Frist Water Works is going to be replace by another water park. 2.Great America gets a water park and the last water park in the chain of parks.

Like other people have said not alot of people from Carowinds will know that Stealth is from Great America and the coaster is not that old so I see a win win for Paramount.

Remember Jonathan, they've been jerked around about getting new rides more often than we've heard a hyper is right around the corner. There was land cleared for Hypersonic, signs put up - and you see where it landed. Now another of their rides, one they at least got to ride, has been moved out East. We of course know how concrete Paramount's plans are around here.

I don't think they'll be completely happy about the rumored 2005 attraction until the first train leaves with people on it, which should assure them it's real, and will be in the park for at least 3-4 years ;)

I can't believe PGA is moving what I think is their best attraction and replacing it with PKI's waterpark. But it's also a good thing because I'll get to ride it next season because it'll be close. I don't like how they're going to repaint it and give it a different name though I like the stealth theme. Anyways is there any word yet of what's going to go in PKI's waterpark area?
Hm...TopGunKen, are you saying that HyperSonic was originally supposed to be at another Paramount Park before it was built at PKD?

------------------
-Why oh why didn't I take the blue pill?-

Am I alone in thinking that the closing weekend will come, PGA will get on the local media stations, and we'll hear something to the effect of, "public outcry saved Stealth. We're going to remove... Grizzly... instead!" ?

Maybe not. I'm with Jeff, though. My record of flying coasters consists of X-Flight and S:UF, but X-Flight disappointed me. Not just the Vekoma-rough ride (redundant, I know), but the wait/dispatch times. From what I hear, Stealth is as bad, maybe worse, and definately rougher.

But I don't think Carowinds will hurt from it. How can they, it's a new ride? People will like it there. It's not close enough to Maryland or Georgia to give anyone else a taste of another flyer (in Georgia's case, a more enjoyable one, but that's neither here nor there.)

PGA will probably not suffer either. I don't see anyone really caring. Maybe SFMW will pick up initially, but I've always thought that would be the better ride park anyway. This waterpark is probably a great deal for PGA, though.

This makes perfect sense actually... PGA wanted to build up their family-oriented side of the park, while Carowinds needed to build up their thrill-oriented side to the park. Fair trade.
