I think there are less shades of grey in terms of opinions now - not just with coasters but with everything. Something is far likely to be amazing or to suck than it is to be somewhere in between.

Plus, what does make me sad is that a number of enthusiasts (particularly younger ones) seem to rate coasters based on a YouTube video, or a park on an hour long Vlog made by someone they have never met. Getting out there and riding things seems to be less important now. I think that's pretty sad.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

In some ways I agree, given that I've had wildly different rides on the same coaster, even on the same day in the same seat on the same train. The difference between Boulder Dash during the day and Boulder Dash at night is "top 25" to "top 5." That said, having ridden a billion B&M's, I can look at the video of Orion and have a pretty good idea of what it's going to be. But on the other other hand, I haven't ridden Mako or Fury 325, 2 of the most highly regarded B&M's, so maybe I actually have no idea what I'm talking about (though I have ridden Leviathan and thought it was merely okay).

Yeah, its a psychological phenomenon, but its real. I guess that the short hand term is "the power of suggestion" but maybe somebody knows the clinical term for it. People will certainly think of a ride different when people have been singing its praises and its getting ranked, and will go in with skepticism when its been trashed and/or they didn't like the POV. Its important to keep open minds and go by yours experience and not other peoples.

Mix of confirmation bias and self-fulfilling prophecy.

Others' opinions shape your opinion, which influences your feelings of the ride. "I knew it would be a great ride because everyone else said it was!"

I'd say that I have a lot of unorthodox and unconventional picks for my top 25, while I leave off a lot of coasters that are traditional fan and/or enthusiast favorites. Its not so much me being spoiled, its mostly me just trying to be honest and not let outside influence affect the rankings but its also partially wanting to stir the pot. Giving my real opinion and being honest is the most important part, but the shock value is nice too.

Wait. You change your opinion of rides in order to stir the pot? And, to you, that's better?

The subjective could be tainted by random?

The Beast & Out of Control are near the top of their respective genre. One could say the Beast is Out of Control. I think that’s the ultimate conclusion of this thread. Pull out RL Stine put on some October and toast out the holiday and bring on the off season...

I don't change my opinion on it, but I might be more vocal about it if it stirs the pot. And I won't shy away from asserting it. Like how absurdly RMC heavy my top 25 is, or how I put Copperhead ahead of Fury. Or how I'm not goo goo and gaga over old school B&M like most enthusiasts are. Nothing personal, but I know I have some unorthodox opinions. I'll ride everything and enjoy almost anything though. I'll never turn down a trip to a park to ride coasters.

There's nothing wrong with having opinions -- that's one of the joys of Coasterbuzz. But why dliberately "stir the pot"?
