Splash Mountain rides to be rethemed to Princess and the Frog

From the blog:

Today we are thrilled to share a first glimpse of a project Imagineers have been working on since last year. Splash Mountain – at both Disneyland park in California and Magic Kingdom park in Florida – will soon be completely reimagined. The theme is inspired by an all-time favorite animated Disney film, “The Princess and the Frog.” We pick up this story after the final kiss, and join Princess Tiana and Louis on a musical adventure – featuring some of the powerful music from the film – as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras performance.

Oh wow. Yeah, that's not okay.

Talking with a friend, we were half joking/half serious that this plan has been in place for sometime much like a pre-written obituary for an older celebrity or well known figure. Disney has had these plans ready for release for some time, and the time was right to start the process.

The remarkable thing about Song of the South is that it is edgy enough that it was considered pretty racist in 1946 when that attitude was still widely accepted in a lot of the country.

I remember seeing the movie in a theater when I was very young and I thought maybe that was my memory playing a little trick on me. However, a quick look online shows a re-release to theaters in 1980 and that would make sense given how vague my memory of the movie is now.

As someone who leans toward forgiveness and education over cancel culture, I think Song of the South should have some sort of public release purely as an educational tool.

Well, Disney does smack the phrase: “may contain outdated cultural depictions” on several of their older films.

I suppose that's their attempt at educating the masses.

I think removing Song of the South in place of Princess and the Frog is an educational tool in and of itself. It's up to us parents, etc. to educate our kids as to why this is happening and why it's a good thing.

Ironically, those that are "cancelling" Disney over this are the ones who need educated the most; problem is, they are also the most resistant to it.

There is a 2GB 720p copy up on Usenet if you are into ancient but useful internet technologies. 😁

I don’t recall ever seeing the movie so was interested after all this hubbub.

Will the ride still be called Splash Mountain after the re-theme?

Oh how we pine for the days of a Flash Mountain controversy.

You don't even have to go to shady or obscure sources.

Song Of The South is available to watch on archive.org

It's not shady...except for that whole copyright thing. (Archive.org has been in hot water for this recently re: books.)

If you have the time, I recommend giving this a read. The podcast is also pretty good.
