Speed : The Ride

Has anyone been on Speed ?

What is it like ?
is it fast ?
is it long ?
Speed the ride is one of my favorite launched rides ever! I'd say the track is not as psychotic as Batman and Robin or Mr. Freeze, but it has 3 boosters, one out of the station, one again after the loop and that same one again going backwards.

You basically launch out of the station, and hit a majorly overbanked turn that dives into a tunnel. (which happens to go under the sidewalk along the strip) You then go through a perfectly circular loop (the kind that gives you extra g's), hit another booster, then you take another quick turn and fly up a tower, which is totally vertical. The tower is supposedly 220 feet or so, but the train doesn't quite make it to the top (like all of these rides) and you then do the whole thing backwards, with that booster after the loop now boosting you into the loop. Oh, this ride supposedly goes around 76 mph, so of course it dries your contacts and can jerk tears out of you. I think it is the best ride in Vegas by far, I sort of like the Manhattan Express (at New York New York) but I think loses all steam too quickly, and becomes totally lame at the end (they should ease up on the brakes halfway through, this would make the final bunny hops and hills alot more intense)
Great ride--I love how you are launched and then you speed up again after the loop. It is a very short ride though!
it's short, but all shuttle coasters are short... so at least it goes fast.
I am just curious, as a poor college kid, how much would a ride on Speed cost me? What about the other Las Vegas rides? How much does it cost to ride and do you get re-rides? Just wanna know if I ever want to visit Vegas and have to proportion my money between gambling and coasters.

Speed costs $6 for one ride, although you can buy a all-day ride ticket for something like $15-18. Speed gets about an 8 for a ride, and a 10 for intensity! You MUST go on it at night.

The second-booster, mid-way through the ride, is what really makes this ride good. After the vertical tower freefall, the booster actually decelerates you back to around 45 mph so that you can make it through the loop & banked turns without blacking out. (Too bad) haha

ahh.. that makes sense, all i can tell is that I hear the typical high-pitched whine the booster makes as you hit it backwards. I thought it was accellerating you but now that I think about it I actually got pressed into my seat as I went over it, as opposed to flying against the restraints like on Vertical Velocity. They shouldn't put the alcohol and coasters so close together in Vegas.
Speed rocks!
Speed Rocks! The seconed set of boosters acutaly slow you down when you come back through it backwards which maks for a really cool experience in the loop. ;) Your best bet would be to get an all day ride pass, I've been on the thing 210 times and 18 of them were in one day thanx to that pass!

It is the best ride!!! I love it, it is really really fast, smooth, and intense. The loop is tight and the overbank is crazy, you have to do it front row!!! The tower is fun with great airtime. It is a must if you are within 300 miles!!!

Is riding it simmular to Mr.Freeze ?
and was it a custom design to fit around the building ?
What is the wait usually like?
If only it had a top hat

HurricaneGeauga- Just in case
what do you mean by that ?
no, it's totally unlike Mr. Freeze, it was customed designed to fit the building. The overbanked turn dives under the sidewalk (along side the main Las Vegas strip) and after the loop it snakes around the entryway before entering the tower. I've never been on it in the daytime, and at night I've never seen a line. I've only been on it about 20 times (with the all day pass) on two different trips to Vegas. There is usually a wait while they wait for people to get on the ride, not in line like usual! They would never run the ride with just me and my girlfriend on it, they always wanted more riders.

Speed is awesome!!! The overbanked turn as soon as you come outside is intense.

Compared to Mr. Freeze, Speed's overbanked turn is MUCH smaller and not nearly as intense. I liked the top hat on Freeze better than a basic vertical loop of Speed. And Freeze's launch up the tower is quite a bit more interesting than just going up then down.

Freeze is consideribly more "in your face." Speed is a very good ride, but I think Freeze is a very very very good ride.

Speed is AWESOME! It was very smooth IMO, and you should definetly ride it if you're in the Las Vegas area.
This is a great ride. I would advise buying the all-day pass. I was there on Memorial Day Weekend and there was no line, so if there was no line then, then I doubt there ever will be one. This is the best coaster in Vegas, and the second best thrill ride (after Big Shot)
Awesome ride... but is it true the initial launch is only 30-40 MPH!? If so, I cant even imagine what Hypersonic would be like!!!! The initial launch definitly feels faster than that... and to tell you the truth it feels faster than S:TE as well... (that ride felt sloooooooow)
