Son of Beast cleared by state, park gives no date for reopening

Posted | Contributed by metallik

After a six-week probe, state investigators report that an inspection of the Son of Beast at Kings Island “revealed no irregularities” in the operation of the record-breaking wooden roller coaster. However, the ride remains closed because park officials have “not decided what steps they plan to take concerning the ride,” according to an investigation summary released Wednesday.

With all the bad press that this ride has received, I wonder if they have finally decided to throw in the towel. Frankly, I would be surprised if it ever re-opens.

But the point remains as is similar with Mean Streak, the coaster count and record-holding factor might have bearing...

I'm not sure why folks in WV have so many Stars and Bars in their pickup trucks -- it's somebody else's heritage they're celebrating, not their own.

And honestly, which part of being the descendant of people who thought slavery was OK is something to celebrate? That's the single darkest time in American history.

I don't think the coaster count or records have much to do with things. I mean, if you do a search for Son of Beast, you get more hits regarding its problems than its records. I'd say it's more about having to give up a major attraction.

After they remove it, they should launch the fireworks from where it was so they don't have close Beast every night at 9:45.

I think the last 8 years was the darkest time in American history. Carowinds is always looking for some hand me down Coasters!

No I don't have a kid, but I still want to ride!

^You have got to be kidding me. Let me guess you think we have entered the golden age now too.

If you think 2000-2008 was bad you need to read up on your history times that were worse:
-Revolutionary Period
-Post Revolutionary Period
-Civil War
-Guilded Age
-World War I
-Great Depression
-World War II

Jeff, Jeff, Jeff...they're not celebrating slavery, they're celebrating states' rights. Didn't you get the memo?

Carowinds is my local park and while the park may like hand me downs most of the people (the ones who know coasters) have had enough hand me downs to make us sick to death. We have a wood coaster that beats the **** out of you as it is so we sure dont need this piece of junk. Honestly I dont see whats so hard to about burning it down. They could sale tickets to people so they can watch it burn. I know I would buy one! CF should just face it... its a money pit... a liability.

I would agree with you, John, if Flight of Fear had been a complete failure.

I think there are ways that the ride could probably be salvaged. I think such a salvage, though, would be more successful if it were done "Kennywood style": bring in some wood coaster engineers who can identify and understand what is really wrong with the ride (there are plenty in Cincinnati, representing at least both of the top two wood coaster design companies in the world...) and use Son of Beast as the foundation of a really good ride.

Dave, you make like what they did with "Phantom's Revenge,"

What would the call the revamped ride at KI? "Grandson of the Beast," "Beasthawk," or "Diamondbeast?"

Beast Tamer

...Or like they did with the Pippin. Turn the old ride into a new ride which may or may not have any thematic connection at all with the old ride.

The point is, there is a lot of Son of Beast that has never really been much of a problem, and a lot of that stuff is big and expensive. So why not keep that part, and tear down and replace the part that doesn't work. Yes, I'm looking at you, gigantic first helix...!

Kinda ranks up there with bringing diseases over from Europe that Native American had little immunity from killing them off, then stealing their land, then forcing them on reservations........

However I dont see us waving British (or European) flags on the back of our trucks to recognize that.
