Smurf Mountain at PKD

Was the Smurf Mountain at PKD considered a roller coaster?

http://home.comcast.net/~coastercrazy/wsb/html/view.cgi-home.html-.html
I think Smurf Mountain was a water ride of sometime. Similar to Escape from Pompeii at BGW.
ehhhht...
thanks for playing.
Smurf mountain's conveyance system (inherited from a ride known as Land of Doozies, which i preferred much more) was indeed built by Arrow Dynamics and used a track system similar to their mine trains, and indeed even had a lift hill, but to call it a coaster would be excessively generous. Yes, it was a track based ride that used potential energy stored via a lift hill, but it's intent was not to be a coaster but to be a dark ride. It's no more a coaster than Calico Mine ride at KBF.

I think its pretty interesting that some parts of the track are visible in the mountain "rock." Why some pieces weren't removed is beyond me.
I distinctly remember riding a water ride in Smurf Mountain where the Smurfs were anamotronic fiqures.

Edit: Funny, after doing some searching I guess I was wrong and you were right. I still remember that for some reason. Funny... Smurf Mountain isn't mentioned on rcdb. *** Edited 6/7/2004 4:27:00 PM UTC by coasterguts***

coasterguts,
it must've been the drugs ;)

Smurf Mountain was a mine train. Also in the mountain was the haunted River, which was a pirates of the carribean meets haunted mansion meets log ride type of thing. That's probably what you remember.

i remember smurf mountain. it was a very slow tour of the inside of the mountain that now houses Volcano. the conveyance was a train, moving at maybe 2 miles per hour, and yeah there was a lift hill, but at no point did the train "roll" above a snails pace, nor did it "coast" at all, so i don't think it's a roller coaster. the theme was, yeah, smurfs frollicing, and gargamel chasing them, and stuff like that. pretty boring. as i remember, it was originally Doozer Mountain, you know, those little green guys from Fraggle Rock. but i could be hallucinating that, i was very young at the time.

anyway, you can still see the old Smurf Mountain station from the Volcano line. it's higher up on the mountain, and they've covered it with fake weeds and stuff. i wonder if the old train is still in there somewhere.

you guys are thinking of The Haunted River, which shared the mountain with Smurf Mountain and Timeshaft. The Haunted River featured NO smurfs, but it was also a dark ride, sort of a low-budget haunted house thing. i remember glow in the dark fish and other boring stuff, which finished with a diamond falls-esque drop at the end.

Timeshaft, the third ride that was in what is now Volcano's mountain, was one of those rides that spins around really fast and then the floor drops out from under you and you stick to the walls. the queue was a very long, very narrow little claustrophobic tunnel. as you got closer to the actual ride through the tunnel, music would get louder and louder. in the room with the ride, there was disco-style lighting and they blared rock n roll. not a bad effect overall.

I remember Timeshaft very distinctly. I still have nightmares about all of the teeanage girls screaming for their life.

Regardless, must have been some good dust in that that place to for some of us not to remember what actually happened. *** Edited 6/7/2004 4:33:11 PM UTC by coasterguts***

The only water ride type ride that was themed to the Smurfs that I can think of was The Smurfs Enchanted Voyage at Kings Island.

Its Funny that the 80's have returned now all you see is He-man,Ninja Turtles,Strawberry Short Cake, My little Pony,CareBears,RainBow Bright...And coming soon The Smurfs are making a return to TV and to Theaters Near you this time in 3D. Check this out

Looks Like the Smurfs are a coming again...This makes me sooo Happy.

Iam sure we will hear more when the Licensing Show starts tomorrow.

Bzzzzzt.... not all correct info.

Prior to the attraction becoming "Smurf Mountain" this area of "Lost World: Fantasy Mountain" housed "Professor Backenforth's Journey into the Land of the Dooz" not Land of Doozies or Doozer Mountain.

Also, the "Dooz" were in no way related to the Fraggle Rock characters. Rather they were chubby cheeked, big nosed animatronic characters developed expressly for the park. The "Dooz", as the storyline of the attraction went, were fabled characters responsible for making things like grass grow, Old Faithful blowing, etc etc etc. Hence the "Dooz" they were the "doers" behind mother nature and natural wonders.

As others mentioned, a few pieces of conveyance track are still visible sticking out of the mountain. Also the station is still in tact, and although very messy, it can still easily be viewed on the mountain.... especially when you look to the right while climbing Avalanche Bobsled's lift.

Also as someone else mentioned... King's Island had a Smurf Ride attraction that utilized a water trough/boat conveyance device. That is probably the source of confusion with the ride.

Once again, Shaggy to the rescue.
Interesting note about "Professor Backenforth"
Did it have that name its whole life, or just early on? I rode that ride dozens of time as a kid and don't remember ever hearing about Professor Backenforth.

I remember Smurf Mountain, I rode it when I went to PKD years ago(I think 1992??) It was a slow dark ride in a mountain on a slow moving Train I think, and there was loads of smurfs inside and everything, I remember quite enjoying it.

Also loved the log Ride next door to it, I remember that well, the ride itself was'nt great, but the Drop was great because of the Hand/head Chopper affect ;)

Don't forget there was a fourth attraction in the mountain as well.

MT.Kilimanjaro was located to the right of haunted river's final drop near what is now the midway leading to FOF...if I remember correctly it was a bayern curve type ride that at one point in the course went in & out of a tunnel in the mountain.

Speaking of haunted river the drop used to come out of the area where V:TBC's first launch now sits & if you look down you can still see the track used which led back to the station for the ride as well as one of the old boats just sitting there as part of V:TBC's theme.

As for the old smurf mountain ride I never rode it when it had that theme....I did ride it prior to the smurf theme being added a couple of times as a kid though & somewhat enjoyed it even with the rather crude theming/animatronics of the time, haunted river on the other hand I only rode once & never set foot on that thing again due in part to that huge drop for the finale.

Fortunately for me the one time I did ride HR most of the theming & animatronics weren't working....boy were the commercials for that ride scary or what?

As far as Smurf Mountain being a coaster goes, if we can count The Undergound, why doesn't SM count?

I rememeber The Land of the Dooz. "It was a happy Doozy visit...arn't you glad you didn't miss it...it was a happy Doozy visit for us all..." Damn song won't get out of my head. They "did" everything including spinning the earth on its axis, supplying red water to the red sea, yellow water to the yellow river...

I remember reading that before The Land of the Dooz, the ride was originally an Atlantis attraction, but I don't remember going on it. I was very young the year the mountain opened.

So...I think I should get one coaster credit for Smurf Mountain, one for the Land of the Dooz, one for Atlantis (since I probably rode it and do not remember), and a bonus for having the song from Land of the Dooz stuck in my head for so long. Does anybody have pics of the old Smurf attraction at PKD?

-Uncle Jay

I was wrong. Atlantis is what the Haunted River used to be the first year it was open. I guess I did not ride that.
Hey Brett, you went to PKD, didn't you?
we used to bring those little squirt guns and shoot the animatronic Smurts on Smurt Mountain, lol!! i shoulda been kicked out of the park many times for the crap i threw at those things.....oh well, young and immature i was back then...

as much as i love Volcano, i miss each and every one of those four rides that were part of the old Lost Mountain, especially Time Shaft and Mt Kiliminjaro. PKD let a lot of quality rides go between 89 and 92...so sad

Tim....whos at least glad the old "Paratroopers", now known as the "Flying Eagles" are still in the park....and who will NEVER forgive the park for getting rid of the Apple Turnover...still the best Enterprise in my book

still trying to think of a good signature...

This one time, at PKD ... but then again, that's just skirting the line between creepy and pedaphile ...
