Six Flags settles Magic Mountain discrimination suit

Posted | Contributed by supermandl

A group of minority parkgoers sued Six Flags in 2001 after they claimed Six Flags Magic Mountain security guards improperly searched them and engaged in racial profiling. The company has set up a $5.6 million fund to settle the class-action discrimination lawsuit but did not include an admission of wrongdoing.

Nathan-

Think about the reasons for that. It doesn't reflect upon race, it reflects upon the demographic of the area. There is a larger population of just about every minority group in SoCal than anywhere else in the country that I'm aware of.

If you've got a larger percentage of one group of people frequenting your park of COURSE there's going to be a higher than average number of that group of people getting into trouble.

You can't blame any of this "riff raff" on race. That's stupid, ignorant, and immature. Come to Cedar Point some time and watch how many white, Midwestern farm boys and suburbanites you see jumping lines and swearing. I'll bet it's a higher percentage of them in comparison to Hispanic and Black folks causing trouble at SFMM. Oh, wait... I forgot- the majority of people who visit Cedar Point ARE Midwestern farmboy and suburban types.

I hate racists.

I think you misunderstood my post. I am not racist. What does Cedar Point and midwestern farmboys have to do with a $5.6 million discrimination lawsuit at Six Flags Magic Mountain?Who's blaming "riff raff" on race? You wrote: "If you've got a larger percentage of one group of people frequenting your park of COURSE there's going to be a higher than average number of that group of people getting into trouble."Then dosn't it seem a bit absurd and unfair that a group of "minorities" who are the majority of parkgoers can sue the park and get $5.6 million for discrimination when it "reflects upon the demographic of the area" ?? It would be as ridiculous as those midwestern farmboys suing Cedar Point.*** This post was edited by NathanR 5/17/2004 3:30:29 PM ***

I think its good amusement parks are beefing of security, they should be fun for everyone as well as safe. The thing about searching thug or gangster looking people could go both ways, but in my opinion they should sweat them more than anyone, thats where all the stuff begins. I mean c'mon a fool wearing a raiders jersey, baggy as hell pants a heavy coat and a beanie in like 80+ temperature that guy must be concealing something or is probably looking for somewhere to smoke his drugs. At amusement parks there are families of all races trying to have a great time with their kids and some punks want to take over that place, UN-acceptable. We don't want to hear "Man F*** that i was with this B***h and she....." when i first don' want to hear that and second what kind of message are we sending to the kids, it ok to curse in public.I am a Hispanic and totally am tired of someone at a park trying to fight me because i was looking at them wrong (in their own words). Everyone should just come together and have fun. REGARDLESS OF RACE. We are all people looking for a Great time.
I agree Trendsetter.*** This post was edited by megazeph 5/18/2004 12:08:09 AM ***
