Six Flags New England wants to build 385-foot Star Flyer

Posted | Contributed by Jason Hammond

Officials of Six Flags New England are seeking permission from the city to build the world’s tallest swing set ride at their amusement park here. The proposed 385-foot high ride, called the "Star Flyer," would replace their “Sky Coaster” ride and require a special permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals as it exceeds the town’s 200-foot height limit.

Taking out an upcharge and replacing it with a POP...hmmm.

Sucks.

Why does it suck? More people will get to enjoy a thrilling ride now.

For some reason, I thought there was a taller one somewhere.

There is a Star Flyer at Prater in Vienna Austria that is 117 meters tall, which is 384 feet. So the Six Flags ride breaks the record by a whopping foot.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks, than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Yea, but when are most of us ever going to go to a theme park in Austria?

I think the more appropriate question is, "How long has it been since Richard Bannister last visited that park?"

It means we ('we' meaning Jeff) don't want you posting a link and a full Copy & Paste of the article - that adds no value.

The perferrable thing is to use the link on the right side of the page to contribute the story to the news section of the site. You then get credit for the sumission and points in the scoring game. (notice at the top of the page that this was contributed by Jason Hammond)

The system has been in place forever. Seriously, you've been around here long enough to know how things work.

I have been fallowing this for a while now and new late last night about the verified height.

I think it's great to see the Sky coaster go for a new attraction that in included in the price and higher capacity. Unfortunately this is a reasonably low capacity ride. added height will just drag that down more.

In all I like they are getting a new ride. I think the water park needed attention more though. I don't get the point of the record. The ride woudl ad as much draw in the region at 200-250ft as it would at 385.

the Mass live article also posts that SFI bought 2 of them so they will not hold a record it will be shared. so it will have the same half truth marketing as Goliath "the largest ride of it's king in the world."

Small town bureaucracy drives me absolutely bonkers.

How many of the questions in that article could be avoided if the questioner first asked his/herself "Wait, are we talking about an amusement park here? ...the one that's been there for +100 years? Oh right. Ok, never mind then, carry on."

It's basically a stage for locals to come in and broadcast ignorance:

"I'm CONCERNED!"

"Why?"

"BECAUSE I HAVEN'T EDUCATED MYSELF ON THE MATTER AT HAND"

*heavy sigh*

No, it means you can't just copy and paste stuff like that, because it violates copyright law. In the case of news items, you should know the drill by now... submit it to news via the links at right, and if it isn't spam (or a story about some ride getting stuck for an hour... sorry dudes, it didn't feel like "news"), we'll post it.

I have submitted to the news in the past and it never shows up!So why should i bother? If i didnt post it in the forum it would have never been on here in the first place.

To Gonch, What points and game are you talking about? I thought this was a amusement park industry discussion website? You gave me a reason why my post was deleted but what about the posts that were made by others? Why were those deleted?

Scoring game on your profile.

Also, on the main page of the site near the bottom left - list of members and points.

Oh, and at the bottom of every post, the "vote up" link and "+0 rectangle" that shows how many points a post has received from other members.

That's all the Scoring Game. :)

Aren't the birds going to get killed flying into this thing? Someone please think of the poor birds! ;~P

I'm not sure in the several times I've been to SFNE that I've ever even seen anyone ride that Skycoaster. It's a complete waste of space.

The site is atop a small rise, maybe 10-15ft or more above the rest of the main midway, so that'll add to this star flyer's height as well and make it look even more impressive. Hopefully it'll liven up the space in that "North End" area of the park, it's pretty dead.
