Six Flags Magic Mountain's new Drop of Doom opening delayed

The opening for the newest attraction at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia -- a 400-foot-drop tower ride -- has been delayed a week for further testing. The ride, dubbed "Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom," a drop-tower thrill ride, was scheduled to open to the public this weekend but has been pushed back to July 7. Park officials said testing for the ride is taking longer than anticipated.

This may also be a stupid question, but could the coaster in the middle going up and down affect the drop tower in any mechanical way or safety way? I mean, the original structure was not built with this purpose in mind. I understand that the new tower is not built really ON the other ride, but it just seems crazy to do this. I'm sure the discussion has been had regarding whether or not this tower is seemingly redundant since there is basically the same ride already present, but I'd be really leery of riding something built onto another existing ride.
Not that I would ever ride a 400 foot drop tower anyway. Lol I just started riding 200 ft towers yesterday, so this ride could be next door to me and I could care less. The question about safety remains though.

I'm hoping the novelty/newness factor is worn off by the time I hopefully visit next spring. But heck, I might not even have the nerve to go on it when I see it in person. Riding Drop Zon...I mean Drop Tower at KI freaked me out like no other ride (I can do the drop side of Power Tower with no problem), so another 100 feet...

MaxairMike, I'm with you. I have no desire to ride this thing AT ALL. Ever. I think the only reason I would ride it would be because if I ever got out to Magic Mountain, it would be once in my life, so I think I would do it in case of future regret for not riding.

There is a drop tower/reverse freefall ride called Tower of Terror somewhere in Australia that combine these two exact rides. It isn't quite as tall as Superman, but it's the same make and model, so I assume they know what they're doing.

That one's a little different, though. The Australian model is a standard drop tower with the coaster going up one side. This one is a coaster with the drop rails attached. They're the same, but opposite.

kpjb- Tower of Terror at Dreamworld is not a standard drop tower. The drop ride was added to the tower years after the roller coaster opened. The fundamental difference in the tower style has to do with the single versus dual track configuration for the roller coaster, not the drop ride. It's my understanding that the Drop of Doom is an identical ride system to the one added to the Tower of Terror. The only difference between the two is the height.

I really don't know the history of the ride, but that looks like a standard Intamin tubular drop tower to me, except there's a coaster attached to one side.
The SFMM ride looks like a coaster with drop rails put on the side of it.
