Six Flags Great America announces Superman: Ultimate Flight

Posted | Contributed by beast7369

Six Flags Great America finally announced their new B&M flyer for 2003, which to no surprise is called Superman: Ultimate Flight. The ride is similar to the one at Six Flags Over Georgia.

I've ridden X~F with it reclining on the hill in early 2002, makes the ride 10x better in my eyes.

Anyone think it might end up being like AIR? Water effects and what not.

I cant wait to see pics of the themeing, maybe this is a new direction 'some' Flags of Six parks are going in, more themeing,

You'd think someone being paid to speak on behalf of the park would have a little better idea as to what exactly is being announced and how it operates :oP

Are there any ride layout pictures or a promo video anywhere???

Uh, I believe most of Ohio is in the Eastern Timezone, not Midwest, which Chicago very certainly is. I've been to PKD (never SFWoA), and it's in my timezone(West Virginia), but Gurnee, Ill(yes, I've been to SFGA too) is most definitly an hour behind. So, yes, it IS the ONLY flyer in the MIDWEST. Sorry guys. I hope to get back out there soon, as I loved the Bull, and have not been there since Deja Vu' or V2 were built.

Now that our "Nutty Buddy" is back, I guess I'll have to change this...

Sorry, Scorpion, but the timezone thing actually has nothing to do with it. The term "Midwest" predates the very concept of time zones by about half a century. Besides, most of Indiana is in the Eastern timezone, but is most definetly in the Midwest.

EDIT- BTW, it's called the "Central" timezone, not the "Midwest" time zone.

I am really looking foward to the New Superman Flyer, and having the chance this summer to ride it. I will be making my first visit to Six flags Great America following the week after stark raven mad. I can't wait! I really enjoy X-Flight and I hope that Superman will be even better.
Okj being this is my home park I might be able to explain this a bit with a few pics to prove my point.

I don't think the new flyers with go into the flying position out of the station because...

The has an extra set of wheels on it that are used for putting it into the flying position, with a unit inside the sation. You notice them in these pics, the set is close to the rider's head, during the ride, but are not touching the track at all.

in this one you can see said wheels going into the unit, that moves them into and out of the flying position.

once in the station the hyduralics, kick in, the back of the rides is unlocked, and the lever pulls up. Once reloaded, the lever pushes down and glides the train and wheels back into the flying postion and locks the train there. (the wheels shown in the last 2 pics are now covered by the lever mind you, which is the big ass red bar).

Without this lever, I doubt that the hydrulic system alone would be able to move these multiton trains into the flying postion, by themself. So saldy I have to say they will go into, and be taken out of flying position in the station. which during busy days, not having the twin loading station is going to be a huge factor, beause loading/unloading time on this ride were hell this year.

The term "Midwest" dates back to a time when St Louis was about as far west as this country had been settled and many of the states west of there had not been inducted into the Union. Why do you think St Louis is called the "Gateway to the West"? That's what the Gateway Arch symbolizes.

What's mid-way between St Louis and the east coast? Yep...Ohio! And at that time it *was* in the mid-west.

Herald is right. It was someone's error when they wrote the press release (remember PR people write those, not operations people). I'm sure they assumed it would be like X-flight or whatever...

Anyway, check out pictures of the station of SFGAdv's flyer's station. You can see pictures of the Swing Arm Mechanism (aka SAM) already in place on the station track. This is the machine that tilts the trains, and works exactly like the flyer at SFOG works.

Is that a Q-bot in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

Not sure if anyone is reading this item still, but the press release, as written, was correct. The tilt happens in the station, just like the others. B&M's mechanism couldn't work any other way.

Chalk up the error to the reporter at The Herald.

Well, I like the idea of a first, but i'm REALLY p^$$e) about the removal of Shockwave.

THAT WAS MY FAVORITE RIDE!!!!!

I had the opportunity today on the way up to Milwaukee, to go past Great America, and they were running some of the coasters, now in the short time I drove by on the interstate, I could not see if they were running Superman, so on the way back at night I took a quick drive by and saw that the ride is pretty much done and themeing is place from what I could see at night so everything looks good for media day and opening day :-)
