Six Flags Great America announces Goliath roller coaster

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Six Flags says Goliath will be the fastest wooden roller coaster in the world and feature the world's tallest and steepest drop. All totaled, the coaster will tout three world records. The ride will feature two inversions and an 85-degree plunge after Goliath takes riders up a 165-foot lift hill, then plunges them down a record-setting 180 foot drop, Six flags says.

Well since that's already been confirmed and announced, so do I.

That Texas heat is really getting to you, Tek. Read his post again.

Maybe it's the heat, or maybe it's the giant foam cowboy hat?

I feel like I've been under a Texas-sized rock missing this announcement. Quite impressive.

I'm still an RMC virgin, but I'd give this coaster my V-Card if it treated me right.

I swear I have to stop reading on no sleep.

A group of us just returned from a Labor Day visit to Great America. We spoke with Hank Salemi at the gate and he couldn't be more excited. Just like he said the land is being cleared. All that remains is the building permit from the city of Gurnee, then work will immediately start on the ride. Looks to be around 9/10 next village meeting date.

The buzz has really spread, many people posing at the site several with Outlaw Run tees. So we asked what they think of Goliath's layout and heard positive reviews. It's just and old Iron Wolf Station and dirt now but we all took pictures.

I'm planning on long waits for this coaster next year. It just can't come soon enough.

American Eagle Blue Backwards again truly rocks. Catch it now until 10/27

I was at the park Sunday and spoke to two Eagle maintenance crew members about Goliath, they had seen the layouts and confirmed RMC as the builders, they also said that it would not have a catwalk all the way around, just up to the first Hill.

For whats thats worth?

Love IT Live IT Die for IT!!

We noticed that also. Probably all in a space saving move for the park. Hey it adds extra thrills riding nothing to your sides but air.

That's how Outlaw Run is built as well. Even voyage has a section like that.

The only difference between this and an advertisement is the lack of exclamation points lol.

Eagle backwards is awesome, you can't tell when you are going to hit bottom that drop is so big.

Looks cool, but it also looks short. At that speed, I would think it would be like Top Thrill Dragster, and be over in less than a minute. Though I guess that would make for a quick moving line. Though I see huge crowds coming for this. I'll stick to my trip to Kings Island for banshee.

I didn't do it! I swear!!

Well being from Belleville, IL in the southwestern part of the state I'm ashamed to say I have yet to make the drive up to Gurnee to visit this park. Looking at what they have added the past decade or so I'll be making my way up there next summer when I visit my family. Any park regulars have a recommendation on where to stay and time of year to go? If you could PM to avoid taking this off topic I would love some feedback.

Back on topic this looks to be a very good addition to the park. I'm glad another manufacturer has joined the business and from what I have read puts out high quality coasters!

N72AT climb and maintain 7000

Normally any weekday during June is great. To be honest this whole season weekdays have been rather slow. Going of course depends on when Goliath opens. My guess is no sooner then Mid to Late June. I hope I'm wrong but there is a long way to go building this.

The other big factor Goliath once open is going to bring people from every where. Crowds are sure too be larger next year any day. Just arrive early head to the back of the park...Goliath will be there...that works well for you. We find the first hour the County Fair Area is empty as guests go to Raging Bull or try to get through the double front gate, security then admission gates. Have fun there is plenty to see and do at the park.

One other tip if it's a heat wave everyone goes to the water park leaving the dry park pretty empty.

Hope this helps.

RMC just put up on their FB page an on-ride simulation....looks really yummy.

The twist-n-dive type maneuver is especially inviting...

I would go look it up, but apparently, Facebook unveiled a "new" search feature, where I usually start typing a friend's name or a page I like and it comes up - now it just gives me a pile of friend suggestions and nothing else.
