Six Flags Great Adventure announces Looping Dragon roller coaster

[Ed. note: The following is an excerpt of a press release. -J]

In 2015, Six Flags Great Adventure introduces its thirteenth roller coaster, Looping Dragon. Twenty riders sitting in “face-off” seats rocket forward and backward pendulum style until the train gains enough momentum to complete a full revolution seven stories in the air. The coaster then kicks into high gear, completing full revolutions until it stops momentarily with riders suspended upside down, and then reverses direction for even more thrills.

Looping Dragon joins the park’s Golden Kingdom section, which is home to the world’s tallest and fastest drop ride, Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom, and the world’s tallest and fastest roller coaster, Kingda Ka.

“Looping Dragon is a great addition to our diverse roller coaster collection because it delivers speed and thrills that appeal to both our younger and more experienced thrill-seekers alike,” said Park President John Fitzgerald. The park’s roller coaster collection includes three of the world’s top roller coasters — Kingda Ka, El Toro and Nitro — plus unique coaster experiences that allow Guests to fly head first, stand and ride floorless. Looping Dragon will have a 48-inch height requirement. The ride is expected to debut in the late spring of 2015.

Well, I was attempting to be very sarcastic, but maybe it didn't translate into text very well. I didn't think they actually tried to do that...

I thought this addition was unacceptable.

That's all I needed to read of your post to know that you are entitled and unrealistic. Unacceptable to whom? To you, personally?

I have a sudden craving for a bran muffin.

So... dragons are Akronese?

I have no problem with Six Flags installing a few Rings of Fire. In fact, I think the occasional midway expansion is a great idea, and I wish the big parks would do so more often in those "cosmetic improvements" years.

But this thing is not a coaster by any definition I have ever seen, and it's at least disingenuous of Six Flags to market it as such.

The same goes for Cedar Fair with regard to Surf Dog and Pipe Scream. Not coasters.

Oh, and one more thing that has to be said: Looping Dragon is a poor substitute for Rolling Thunder.

For the last decade and then some, Rolling Thunder was a poor substitute for Rolling Thunder. Sadly...

I know Rolling Thunder was horrible its last few years, but all I can ever remember now was my last ride on it on its second to last night of operation. Except for some screeching in one turn and one rough "pothole", the ride was amazing. Perhaps it is nostalgia as a result of that last awesome ride, but I'm in Dave's camp on this one. Seems to be a bad decision and a poor substitute.

Please check out my petition

Better yet, you could remove your petition so that there's less clutter taking away from actual legitimate causes in need of support.

The online petition format is a resource wasted on crap like this when it could be (rather, could have been) an effective tool in pooling public opinion

I thought this addition was unacceptable. So I took the time to make a petition against this ride. Please check out my petition https://www.change.org/p/six-flags-great-adventure-don-t-give-us-looping-dragon

Instead of me explaining what I think we need instead, just please read the petition, and if you agree, sign it and share it with your friends please :)

My God, you're serious?

Please tell me this is some Kaufmann-esque joke.

I thought it was a satirical joke. You mean he's serious?

Great adventure needs rides with all empty space in that park. I really don't care if they call it a coaster!

Actually, I think a little empty space can make a park much nicer. For all the criticism of Darien Lake, it's far and away nicer than the majority of regional parks that I've visited, mostly because everything is so nicely spread out.

All separated by railroad ties and chain link fences! :-)

And yes, he's serious. I just checked and he's got 29 signatures so far, with 71 needed to make 100. (I don't know what happens when he hits 100, but I'm pretty confident it doesn't mean he'll get his wish.)
And a lot of those signatures are from places like Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Arizona- all people that shouldn't give a rat's ass what going on in New Jersey.

And why would you wish a ride away from your park? If I was going to petition for anything it would be that they stop calling these rides roller coasters!

I don't consider these Rings of Fire to be coasters, but I can't get very worked up over Six Flags calling them coasters. Their PR people are just doing their jobs, making all the parks 2015 additions as exciting as they can. What looks like trains on what looks like track = coasters, it seems.

^Might want to check that link...

I was referring to LK's pic....your link goes to that same Chris Crocker. The football player for the Vikes is definitely an entirely different guy. Defiantly too, I suppose... ;~P
