Six Flags Fiesta Texas announces Goliath

Posted | Contributed by Chitown

To drive that message home, Six Flags Fiesta Texas is investing $15 million into a new thrill ride company officials hope will draw even larger crowds to the Northwest Side theme park next year. Next spring, Six Flags plans to open Goliath, which park officials are already billing as the "ultimate inverted roller coaster." Fiesta Texas spokeswoman Sydne Purvis says the new ride will add a powerful new dimension of thrill technology to an already impressive coaster line-up at the San Antonio park. The ride will be made by B&M.

I was at SFFT during the first week in August. On the ferris wheel I saw pieces of the Batman Coaster from SFNO. So, I was expecting it, but still like other people have mentioned why get it when there's one right down the road and one in Dallas.
Quoted from Wikipedia:

"Modern references...Today the word 'goliath' is often used to describe any person or entity of enormous size."

I think that it is apparent that SF didn't think before they threw a recycled name like "Goliath" onto this ride. People are not going to look up at the not-so-massive 105' lift hill and proclaim, "Wow, now that's really high!" Superman: Krypton coaster is larger at 168', Rattler is larger at 179', Scream is taller at 205', and even the Boomerang is taller at 116'.

Who comes up with this stuff? SFFT is supposed to be the "themiest" Theme park in the chain, right?

Let me end with a positive note, even though the name doesn't fit the ride, and the ride is an old used clone of another coaster operating at another park right down the road, and the park is being arguably misleading about where the ride is coming from and when it was manufactured, at least it is a good ride that has had it's fun factor tested already with very favorable results.

And people wonder why no one respects coaster enthusiasts. I think there's less common and/or business sense being used in this thread than in the Geauga thread! That's a new low ...

Yes people, let's let this press release go out:

Kind of new at Six Flags Fiesta Texas for 2008! Six Flags will be spending around 2 million to move a ride that was manufactured in 1995 from the ruins of Hurricane Katrina to Six Flags Fiesta Texas! Despite the fact that you'll notice it's no taller than most of the other rides in the park, we're going to call it Goliath because we already have lots of theme elements and merchandise with that name on it; you know, it's just easier and cheaper that way. So, y'all get excited because this banged up, used piece of crap that's just a copy even though you'll probably never notice is coming to the park next year! So, you should probably buy a season pass. Yea. Get excited! Woot woot mofos!

I'm not sure what's stupider, expecting them to tell people it's a used ride (because they're SURE to notice and/or care, right?!?) and not hype it up, or thinking that AND posting it on a message board ...

Edit: Oh yea, by the way, I think if I make it to a Six Flags park in Texas next year, I'll drive the 5 hours to FT rather than 5 minutes to oT

Edit2: Wow, editing really screws with formatting ...

^Wait, you forgot about the part that SFNO was its second home after a few years of operation in Japan. That sounds even better!
I just think out of all the recycled name they did choose "Goliath" implying something of great size when the Batman clones are all known for their intense *compact* layouts, but ah well. The GP notices more then we give credit for, they might notice this is Great White with a different paint job, but for the most part it's just enthusiasts. Good for them, its a great ride from what I hear, and will make a good addition to the park.
Ok it used to be the best ride at my homepark, and it was in pretty good shape, but the thing is cursed only B&M to be moved, and twice. Finally the only reason it survived Katrina was because it had to continue the curse.;)

PS. Didnt it only cost 10 Million to put in SFNO, probably because it is completly flat there.

I am wondering why the sudden, they are calling this one by a name other than "Batman the Ride".
A more clever name would be Deja Vu, they have the logo and merchandise already as well.

Cool, Batman New Orleans gets a new home in San Antonio. And it's being renamed Goliath. Cool. No complaints here.

Possibly the only post without any so far.

-So am I. All other Goliath coasters are large Hypers, or pseudo hypers are they not?

I'm ok with everything but the name.
Ya. I could really care less if this ride were named The Dark Knight Coaster, Batman The Ride, Batman The Escape, The Joker's Jinx, The Mind Eraser, or Serial Thriller.

It's just...why Goliath? For such a relatively small-sized coaster?

It's probably a point they're trying to get across -- that small coasters can pack a big coaster punch? ;)

I know my previous post above seemed nitpicky, but all I am really asking is "where's the creativity?"

Calling it "Batman: The Ride" is WAY more creative, because even though it is the same name as the clones in other parks, it is a good name and theme for the ride. Calling it Goliath is simply picking a name out of a hat.

I really do not take too much of an issue with it being very similar to the coaster down the street. Cloning rides at nearby parks have been pretty successful in the past.

The title "Goliath" simply does not fit the kind of ride they are installing. Not at all. What's so goliath about it anyways? Naming it that seems lazy and apathetic on Six Flags part.

"NEW for 2010 at Six Flags! Superman: The Log Flume! Feel the spray of the diabolical Lex Luther as you plummit down a 40' drop into the Lake below. Look out for Doomsday; He's ready and armed with a water hose filled with Kryptonite enhanced water, and he's ready to soak you! You can't fly drenched in all that Kriptonite enhanced water, so you'll have to float to safety on the world's only Superman themed water ride..."

That sarcastic idea sounds better than "Goliath, the 105' tall inverted coaster!"

What exactly is sarcastic about that? That's a pretty good marketing tagline for a new flume ride at whatever Six Flags park doesn't have one. Copyright that thing and make a few bucks on the next time they build a flume. And no, I'm NOT being sarcastic.

I just went to generalpublicbuzz.com, and there were no less than three topics about no one giving a crap about what roller coasters are named. Two of the topics were locked because it was just getting repetitive.

To quote The Simpsons:

MEYERS
The rest of you writers start thinking up a name for this funky dog; I dunno, something along the line of say... Poochie, only more proactive.

KRUSTY
Yeah!

[Meyers, Krusty and the network executive leave.]

OAKLEY
So, Poochie okay with everybody?

WRITERS
Yeah...

Why not call it the Corona Coaster? It's a marketing tie-in and really close to Mexico.

LOL at the comments on this. Like the average park goer has any idea what the coasters' heights at SFFT are relative to each other and like they'll even make a connection with the name "Goliath." This is getting close to self-parody guys...
My goodness, some of the more impulsive posts here have sunken to a new low. I'm not sure what is more stupid, thinking that enthusiasts are actually suggesting they advertise the coaster as used or posting such ridiculous thoughts to a message board.

^I think you need to give the general public a little more credit. I think most people will associate Goliath with something large, and with the massive Krypton looming over the cliff walls, most will realize that this compact B&M inverter, while fun, is not anything close to being "goliath."

Ok so the idea is that A. There will be a certain amount of the GP who will know how tall Goliath is. B. There will be a certain amount of the GP who will know how tall Goliath is relative to other coasters in the park. C. There will be a certain amount of the Gp who will...care. D. And this will matter...somehow. Sorry guys, you've lost me. Find the soccer moms pulling into the parking lot next year, and ask her, Dad, her two kids and their two friends about Goliath. Ask any of them how tall it is and you'll get answers ranging from "Really tall!" to "Pretty tall" to "200 feet" to "800 feet." Ask them how fast it goes and around 100mph I assure you will be a popular answer. *** This post was edited by matt. 9/29/2007 12:46:25 PM ***

I'm sure you're joking about the Corona coaster. But there is probably some type of flying creature from Mexican mythology or some type of Mexican bird, that they could have named this coaster after, and it would have fit very nicely into the Los Festivales section--much better than Goliath.
