Six Flags announces smoke-free parks

Six Flags announced today a new company policy under which its theme parks across the country will become smoke-free environments. This measure is the newest element in the company's commitment to improving the family entertainment experience throughout the Six Flags system.

Hey, if you want to smoke in the park, it's no big deal to me, but when it comes to smoking in queues, that's where I have a problem. I almost got into a fight (potentially physical)with a woman and her kids waiting for Skull Mountain at Great Adventure. My day at the park wasn't that great (which didn't help my mood), so I think I was looking for someone to take my stress out on. So I asked her is she could put the cigarette out (we were on the outside queue), and she spews the free country b.s. or something like that. This is when things got ugly. She threatened to put the cigarette out on my face, I was cursing at her etc. So in other words, just another typical day at my favorite New Jersey park!

I've gotten a lot more mellow on the cigarette issue since then. I really don't feel like getting my ass kicked, and it's usually not worth the stress and aggrevation.

Any of you expecting a ride op to catch every smoker in line has obviously never worked at a park. I'm not saying you should have to speak up to people, all I'm saying is if your so aggravated, do something about it! Sure, theres going to be the idiots that get pissed and cuss. I delt with them every day this summer. My point is, ciggarettes didn't make these people the assholes they are, they did that all on their own. Stop making smokers sound like toilet mouthed baby killers.
hey CoasterDiscern, shut up, seriously. if you want to go rant about the dangers of smoking, go make up a website and do it there. throwing insults at people who smoke certainly does nothing to make yourself credible on these forums, neither do the numerous blatant spelling errors you throw around. nobody cares that your Mr Non Smoker, and no one certainly cares if you play hockey. go be annoying else where, it wont get you far here buddy.
TIMMAAAAAAAAAY!

Somehow I knew you'd get in on this eventually.

-Joey, your drunken campfire partner

In many areas no smoking in queues is not just a park policy, it is a fire code issue. A wooden roller coaster station packed with people is obviously a very bad place to have fire present. This is nothing new. 50 years ago when I was a child, smoking was banned in queues, theatres, and other hazardous areas for fire safety reasons. Heck, smoking is banned in cigarette factories. All the dust from tobacco and paper creates a significant fire hazard in these factories, same as in a flour mill.

If my comments don't meet your standards, "TOUGH LUCK"

Truth hurts doesn't it. You may comment back to me but I will ignore.

I was not directing this towards any inparticular person but your negative remarks show where your head is at. Like I said, truth hurts. Oh, do your lungs hurt at all when you smoke? Just wondering.*** This post was edited by CoasterDiscern 1/21/2006 3:52:45 AM ***

Hmm...smoke free park sounds nice. Too bad that during my visit to PKI in Oct 2005 (which I enjoyed) people were too stupid to go to the designated smoking areas in the park.

If Michigan Stadium (107,501) has a no smoking ban in the seating areas, along with most of the other sports venues in metro Detroit and people follow it (most of the time)....what it the big deal?

While I am not hear to be a part of the health debate about smoking...let the smokers smoke...they are great contributors to taxes.

Smokers your rights are not being compromised by being asked not to smoke in a giant, out door, public place. If you want to do that smoke at a NASCAR event!

Want to see something silly...a zoo that allows smoking in the outdoor exhibit areas.

My families October trip to Cedar Point was great, but all of the people smoking was a pain in the butt. It would be nice if Cedar Point had a rule like this, and even if they do, they need to enforce it. There is nothing worse than standing in line with someone puffing away and you have no place to go.

I'm not going to get on my soapbox or name the health risks associated with smoking, that is your choice. But the least smokers could do was respect others and only smoke in designated areas.

coasterdiscern, your truth is not necessarily another person's. and yes, your comments were directed at people who smoke, quite directly i might add; they were offensive and cutting. you carried yourself in a bragging manner, making it to seem that you are "better than those" who are smokers. thats fine and dandy that you dont smoke, but you have no right to make those that do feel like less of a person. judge not any man lest ye be judged, my friend....think about it.

p.s. i never once indicated whether or not i was a smoker, so dont go making baseless assumptions unless you have proof.

ZING!
What I ment by people at SFKK will be thrilled was I was a season pass holder last season and everytime my family and I went it seemed like we were behind a smoker. I don't have a problem with people smoking, just the fact that there seemed to be ALOT of smokers at SFKK. I don't rememeber that many at PKI!

I think that this is a good thing for Six Flags to implement in their parks. Smoking areas should be sufficient for people at amusement parks. I live in Manhattan and smoking is banned in all indoor public spaces here. People only complain occasionally about having to step outside of a bar to smoke a cigarette (mostly if its cold out), but it's well respected here. Nightclubs are the same way, non-smoking, but have designated areas which most people adhere to. If it can be effective in NYC then it should work in an amusement park.
Coasterdiscern reminds me of that guy who thinks he is better than everyone due to his ACE membership.
Finally...some changes that I like! I can't stand rude smokers (anywhere, not just parks) and hopefully this will reduce or eliminate them. There are the polite ones that will mind their surroundings...no problems there. The ones that don't care about who they are affecting with their habit are the ones that need to get a wake-up call. I could care less if a person is a smoker or not, but once their activities start affecting MY health in MY space, thats when I have issues.

Sorry to tell ya. Judge him who smokes for the lord does not agree with ciggarette smoke. Why would the man upstairs not judge you for all the people dieing out there from smoking. Unlike the United States cigarettes my fellow canadian smokers have warnings on the packs all over the place. Did you know that14,000 people in canada die every year from smoke and an additional 6,000 die from lung cancer every year. Don't tell me ye who judges is incorrect when the sickness and cancer from them are everywhere. I am totally ready to vomit when I see the amount of bacteria filled butts lieing all over the ground at amusement parks not to deligate on the whole world as well. If my remarks about smoking were direct to you smokers and it bothered you. "GOOD" maybe it will knock some sense in your head, or when your dieing from lung cancer and it hurts like hell. Then it will knock some sense in your head. I HAVE NO RESPECT FOR SMOKERS BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO RESPECT FOR YOURSELF. Last thing. Do you think some kid at a park should have to breathe in you smoke just because you having a nick fit or need a butt because your body is craving it.*** This post was edited by CoasterDiscern 1/22/2006 5:35:51 PM ****** This post was edited by CoasterDiscern 1/22/2006 5:36:30 PM ***

You do realize that with each thing you say, people are respecting you less and less.

People who smoke aren't idiots. They know what tobacco does to you. We all know. We don't need you throwing it down everyone's throats. I bet most of the people who smoke probably regret ever starting and would like to quit someday. It's an addiction and, from your off the wall posts, I would assume you've never been addicted to anything.

Anyway it really doesn't matter. Dying from lung cancer may hurt like hell but it'll hurt more when I run you over with my car.

I just couldn't help myself... :)

Guest as SFKK will be happy as long as they keep the wavepool as one of the designated areas.
i'm glad there is no more smoking in the park. maybe that, with the price increase will bring in a better crowd.
My goodness.... what a debate we have here...

Look, here's the deal from a person who smokes Cigars and Pipes only. I would be perfectly happy for smoking to be outlawed. But that isn't likely to ever happen since it didn't work with Alcohol. Since the kinds of tobacco I enjoy are pretty much not allowed anywhere anyway, I'm perfectly happy to see the cigarette smokers get the same treatment. That is, you're not allowed to smoke in public places, in restarants, wherever.

What bugs me are double standards. I can't tell you how many times I've been to a park and been told, sorry sir, you have to put out that cigar by an employee. So I ask them, why, when there are 10 people I can point at that are smoking cigarettes? I get the same b.s. answer every time. "Cigars are more offensive." he he heh eh... WHATEVER.

You know what the difference is though? I can enjoy my day perfectly fine without having to smoke a cigar. I'll lay fair odds not many cigarette smokers can say the same.

Bottom line? Don't smoke in the parks. It's not that much of a burden. And if you find it so, perhaps it's time you took a good long look at the reasons WHY it is.
