Six Flags announces restraint changes to Superman coasters

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Six Flags announced today that it would shorten the seat belt length on the various Superman roller coasters following the death of a man that was tossed from the ride at Six Flags New England. The similar rides at Darien Lake and Six Flags America will get the same treatement.

So how big will be too big on S:ROS?

As for putting on seatbelts, the Men in Black ride at Universal Studios Florida was retrofitted with seatbelts virtually overnight after a kid was tossed out of the ride, even with the lapbar down.

I remember being stapled into TTD the first day it opened and it still felt comfortable, believe it or not.

does anyone else who has ever been a ride op find it odd that only ONE ride op was suspended on 'paid leave,' and blah blah blah? granted it may have been THAT ride ops section of the train, but there should also have been an op on the other side of the train checking belts and bars in the same cars just on the other side...

the responsibility may have been that one 20 yr old op, but damn someone else should have noticed. you know what i mean? like...you may not register in your mind that everything is 100% right but the second something is NOT right it's like a little alarm going off in your head and it takes 2 seconds to see what isn't right...how many ops were on the station and why did not one of them notice? i'd move them all off that coaster, stick 'em in park services. shame on them. all of them that were on the platform. shame on them.

I can't believe I'm saying this but Stapling is GOOD on Intamin rides. Even before this, you can still get good, not painful airtime, with the lapbar completely touching your lap.

For some of us... maybe. But I prefer a LITTLE gap betwen me & the lap bar... if not for air-time... then for comfort. I'm not saying a lot, but enough where I can maybe put my fist there, because it gets very uncomfortable if they pin it down on you... especially for guys, that middle bar just completely wipes out your chances for having kids if they staple it down on you consistantly, and makes for an unpleasant ride... and believe me... it's happened. I've seen ride ops push down it with 2 hands. I've seen ride ops jumping on the lapbar stomping it down to get it a little tighter. I've seen ride-ops get on each others shoulders, and then stand on the lapbar & begin doing the river dance to get it a little more stapled.... ok, maybe not that extreme ;)

Either way, it's not always a good thing if they staple. Just as long as it's REASONABLY close, it should be acceptable.

First of all last summer I went on both SFNE SROS SFDL SROS TTD and MF. I can tell you that the seat belt length on both SF's Intamins were longer then CP's.

Second, in my opinion any T-bar restraint (weiher it be Intamin or BM) needs to be stapled. The bars conform to your body geometry and are confertable, unlike PTCs or Arrow/Morgans where I think you need a little bit of room.

Appropriately enough, Touchdown can't even spell "comfortable"...

I absolutely need to get some illustrative photos of these things. I remember doing a demonstration with the Millennium Force test seat that I think got some procedures changed on that ride.........

Tighter != safer provided the bar is down far enough to prevent the rider from squeezing through an exit path. My legs are long enough that if the end of the bar is anywhere past my kneecaps, I'm not going anywhere. That's not necessarily true for everyone, though, and the fact that Intamin didn't do a better job of positioning the rider is why there is a problem.

This is the perfect chance to mention obesity in America. (This is not meant to offend). Obesity is the NUMBER TWO killer in America for preventable deaths. Seriously now. This should not be so much of an issue. Eat healthy and excersize. But since obesity will not go down any time soon (at least that is how it seems), I agree with their decision to shorten the seatbelts.

Well, wouldn't this also deny guys who aren't necessarily fat, but very very muscular in the stomach. You've seen those strong-men competitions, right? They aren't fat (well, most anyway)... they're just built really heavy in the abs, and it's all muscle, not gut... which would deny them too...
So, it's not only the obese that are denied a ride, but the really tough, too.

Hmm, I'd like to see a ride-op tell that guy that he's not going to ride.

Yep. I can understand that. But there really is no excuse to be overweight unless you are under special circumstances. And muscular guys what can you do?
I'm sorry, but I take that rather personally...

No excuse to be overweight? Do you have ANY idea how that sounds to someone who has been fighting to keep their weight down for ten years??? It is not just a matter of "eat right, and exercise" it is not just a matter of having the will power. You make it sound like it is so damned easy... and then you excuse yourself with... "special circumstances".

I'm trying by God.. and I am SICK of skinny people telling me I have no will power.

I probably missed something, but do you think just the seatbelts will be shortened, or is the entire lapbar going to change?

I really wish SF operators would check restraints better. Notice how CP hasn't had an accident like this ever, and SF parks are having these each year?

^having these each year eh? ::rolls eyes:: Why must everything turn into a "thatll learn ya" from CP die-hards/ employees???

Tell me when CP has had an accident?

Accident on SROS at DL, 2 accidents on SROS at SFNE,

Cedar Point has had 2 Intamins without accidents at all.

I didnt say CP had an accident...in fact CP is one of my favorite, if not my favorite park...im just tired of CP people barging into everything and giving another claim why their s**t doesnt stink.
Check this out... You'll have to scroll down to the SFNE section, though. http://www.screamscape.com/html/six_flags_parks_m-n.html

Silly.
