Six Flags announced today that it would shorten the seat belt length on the various Superman roller coasters following the death of a man that was tossed from the ride at Six Flags New England. The similar rides at Darien Lake and Six Flags America will get the same treatement.
Read the press release from PR Newswire.
As for putting on seatbelts, the Men in Black ride at Universal Studios Florida was retrofitted with seatbelts virtually overnight after a kid was tossed out of the ride, even with the lapbar down.
I remember being stapled into TTD the first day it opened and it still felt comfortable, believe it or not.
the responsibility may have been that one 20 yr old op, but damn someone else should have noticed. you know what i mean? like...you may not register in your mind that everything is 100% right but the second something is NOT right it's like a little alarm going off in your head and it takes 2 seconds to see what isn't right...how many ops were on the station and why did not one of them notice? i'd move them all off that coaster, stick 'em in park services. shame on them. all of them that were on the platform. shame on them.
Either way, it's not always a good thing if they staple. Just as long as it's REASONABLY close, it should be acceptable.
Second, in my opinion any T-bar restraint (weiher it be Intamin or BM) needs to be stapled. The bars conform to your body geometry and are confertable, unlike PTCs or Arrow/Morgans where I think you need a little bit of room.
I absolutely need to get some illustrative photos of these things. I remember doing a demonstration with the Millennium Force test seat that I think got some procedures changed on that ride.........
Tighter != safer provided the bar is down far enough to prevent the rider from squeezing through an exit path. My legs are long enough that if the end of the bar is anywhere past my kneecaps, I'm not going anywhere. That's not necessarily true for everyone, though, and the fact that Intamin didn't do a better job of positioning the rider is why there is a problem.

Hmm, I'd like to see a ride-op tell that guy that he's not going to ride.
No excuse to be overweight? Do you have ANY idea how that sounds to someone who has been fighting to keep their weight down for ten years??? It is not just a matter of "eat right, and exercise" it is not just a matter of having the will power. You make it sound like it is so damned easy... and then you excuse yourself with... "special circumstances".
I'm trying by God.. and I am SICK of skinny people telling me I have no will power.

I really wish SF operators would check restraints better. Notice how CP hasn't had an accident like this ever, and SF parks are having these each year?
Accident on SROS at DL, 2 accidents on SROS at SFNE,
Cedar Point has had 2 Intamins without accidents at all.
Silly.
