Silver Star up and running over Europa Park

Posted | Contributed by Taipan

The structure is complete, the trains are loaded with water dummies, and testing has begun on Europa Park's Silver Star, B&M's tallest coaster so far.

Once again, I am jealous at Europe!  Why can't we have something as good as that over here!?

Aaron - I share your frustration.  It certainly does seem like 2002 is Europe's year to get a ton of coasters, doesn't it?  But I won't go so far as to say its better than anything here in the US.  If you haven't ridden Silver Star how do you know we don't already have something here in the US that you'd prefer?  Just because its bigger doesn't necessarily mean its better.

That's not to say it won't be better than anything in the US, but I know I'd want to ride it first before proclaiming it better than, say, SFNE's Superman or SFGAdv's Nitro.  I'm sure something of Silver Star's size [or bigger] will make its way to the US...just gotta wait for it ;-)

Why be jealous of Europe when we have so many more coasters, and so many more parks?

Coaster Aaron, we do.  It's called Nitro and it's at SFGrAdv in Jackson, New Jersey.  Nitro is 230 ft. tall, B&M's 2nd tallest coaster.

Madhollander, BKF, and Raptor are forcless pieces of B&M trash.  Sure, X is supposed to be a great ride, MF is amazing, and BTR is intense, but really, most parks dont get treatment like Cedar Point, SFMM, and SFWoA.  Europe has been getting some pretty sweet coasters these past few years, and personally with SFDL being my home park, i'd like to see some of these swing my way.  Back to the topic, Silver star looks simply amazing, and that coming from me, a B&M forceless hater, means something.  The trains look pretty sweet too. *** This post was edited by MPD47 on 2/26/2002. ***
Ok, now this is a hypercoaster!  That just looks spectacular. A Europe trip is certainly is order!

Have you ever considered that maybe it's not the park that's the problem, but YOU?
Hey MPD47 -

His point is that Americans have no reason to be jealous of Europeans when it comes to coasters, regardless of your opinions on Raptor and BKF.  And seriously, after calling the rides trash, all I have to say is "Oh my gosh!  You are so controversial!"

I'd rather be riding a "trashy" coaster than no coaster at all.  Yes, even a Boomerang, even Windjammer, even Manhattan Express, even Mean Streak or Hercules, even SFGAdv's Viper.  ANY day with a coaster ride is a good day in my book.

Why is it some people seem to lose perspective about our hobby?

And how ironic that most of the complainers live in or around Ohio, California, Florida and Texas...

Why trade with Raptor when we have Katun... or why trade BTR when WBMW Madrid will get a clone... and even an awesome floorless (haven't ridden it yet). I think it's great to see coasters with some serius attitude popping up in every corner of europe. Maybe we can't compete US with the quantity of coasters but we sure can compete the coasters overseas in quality. Now if CCI could build some more modern classics and GCI builds a duelling/racer... there's still too few woodies in europe, even with Colossos, Thundercoaster, Megaphobia, Stampida or Balder (2003).
Dweaver, good call. thats a little wierd.
SilverStar does look very awesome I must say, and its great that 2002 will be Europe's Year for getting more coasters than America, Oh come on, Our last big year was 1994, so I think its about time we had another Big Year really.

I have just noticed on those photos that Silverstar will have 9 Rows instead of the normal 8 rows, this should give a nice improved capasity, Does any other B&M's Have 9 Rows, How many do Raging Bull,Nitro, Apollo have?????

I Have also noticed on the Offical Page that an offical opening date has been posted(Dont know how long its been there though) Anyway, it seems SilverStar will Open March 23rd, At least we all know now if we didnt already.

Lastly,I am actually going on a Germany Trip with the ECC in April to Ride SilverStar, I cant Wait, Its going to be very awesome indeed. SilverStar here I come:):)

If I'm not mistaken, Nitro has 9 rows of 4 too.
All the B&M hypers have 9 rows of 4.

PaulD - I'd call 2000 a HUGE year for the US, with 38 steel coasters and 11 wood coasters opening [according to RCDB].  How many coasters opened in 1994?

As for when the US will have another huge year I wouldn't suggest holding your breath.  With the economy the way it is we've seen the end of the second Golden Age.

Funny how no one else seems to ride the same Raptor I do. Anyway...

Silver Star looks cool, but saying it will be better before you've been on it seems like gun jumping to me. Bigger doesn't mean better in my experience. I thought I might like Nitro better than Apollo because of the sheer size, and what do you know, I still liked Apollo better.

And of course, with an ocean between them, few of us will ever have the credible perspective to pick a favorite. I would add that I agree with Mamoosh... people really lose perspective. It floors me the way some people spend so much time hating on coasters, when quite frankly most sure beat doing virtually anything else.
